Known for their phat hook-filled songs, Tom drives the rhythm section in 5-string style. From featuring on hit TV show Made in Chelsea (what?), stellar festival appearances and tripped-out music videos, Don Broco are one of the most exciting acts currently on the circuit.

The band consists of Rob Damiani (lead vocals and electronics), Simon Delaney (guitar), Tom Doyle (bass) and Matt Donnelly (drums and vocals). Their latest album, Technology, was released on 2 February 2018 reaching number five in the charts. It’s no surprise they’re headlining an arena tour next year.

Knowing Tom is a bit of a gear-nut, it was too good an opportunity not to put him on the spot and ask some questions for the bassists out there! Before reading on, it’s probably wise that you give this video a watch first…

LYRICS

Man on a mission let me tell you my position
Treat my condition with a full head on collision

It only took you one minute to drop yourself in it
It only took me one minute to find myself in it
Testing my limit
Tied up, tied up
I gotta get out of here
You’re dragging me down

Give me fucking greatness
Or give me nothing at all
Give me what I came for
Or give me nothing at all
Nothing at all
What a day when you show me love
Cos your kings and your queens they mean nothing to me, no
So just give it to me
All your fucking greatness
Or give me nothing at all

Wanna talk about living the quotas you’re filling
Like you’re meant to be made in God’s image
But you just gonna mimic
It’s dragging me down

Give me fucking greatness
Or give me nothing at all
Give me what I came for
Or give me nothing at all
Nothing at all
What a day when you show me love
Cos your kings and your queens don’t mean nothing to me, no
So just give it to me
All your fucking greatness
Or give me nothing at all

We’re reaching the pinnacle
We’re climbing on and on
So give it to me
Give me all your greatness

What’s your signal chain like?

Do you run a wet/dry mix or have any other tricks to get your bass sound live?

I like to run two channels of bass to FOH, one line that is largely clean and unprocessed through octave pedal that can be kicked in when needed and then into my Avalon U5 DI (?) and another that splits to run through a distortion pedal / reverb and into a Darkglass Vintage Ultra-DI for a slightly dirtier/grittier tone. The blend of these two provides plenty of sub and clarity and lets me cut through the mix when needed.

What are your thoughts on Bass effects?

Do you think they muddy the sound or are essential for a bass rig?

I love experimenting with pedals. They’re definitely not essential because the fundamental thing is to hold down the groove and solid bottom end but used effectively they can really enhance a performance, albeit subtly. I love to throw a bit of reverb on some of the more percussive or exposed parts to sweeten things up but used all the time and you could end up with a bottom end that isn’t tight and punchy. A little bit here and there really works for me, even if most people may not notice it!

Do you use a compressor pedal? What’s the best way to set it up?

I use an Origin Effects Cali 76 to lightly compress my bass signal before it gets to FOH. The great thing about this pedal is the built-in hi-pass filter which means I can compress the higher frequencies and tame the more percussive higher notes without squashing all the energy out of the lower notes. Going down to a low A on my main live bass, this is super important. I run a relatively low ratio with a slow-ish attack and fast-ish release to keep most of the dynamics in my playing.

What does your practice regime look like?

Do you prepare in different ways for stints in the studio compared to playing live?

Unfortunately, I’m pretty terrible at practice when we’re out on the road. I never find the right space or time to do any. I have some default warmups I like to do before going on stage but I often feel my playing only really improves when I’m home for a decent amount of time. I find youtube channels like Scott’s Bass Lessons a great way to throw something new into your playing and work on existing issues so if I’m ever feeling uninspired to work on something I’ll head over there to get me started.

What’s the songwriting and recording process like in Don Broco?

It varies from song to song but on the whole Simon (guitarist) and I come up with some music and Matt and Rob (our singers) see what they can come up with vocally to sit on top. If nothing is working, often we’ll just move on. The vocal is key so it doesn’t matter how much we like the music, if we can’t find a great top-line then it’s time for a new idea. We used to have to go into the studio with the entire song demo-ed perfectly but we’ve become a lot better at just going with the flow when we get in there and trying things out – you can get some great ideas when you loosen up, have fun and experiment.

The vocal is key so it doesn’t matter how much we like the music, if we can’t find a great top-line then it’s time for a new idea.

What’s the best way for a bass player to improve their natural groove?

I’d say imitation. There are some amazing players out there, and if you can nail what it is about their playing that makes them so groovy then you can copy it and incorporate it into your own playing. In terms of songwriting ,I think it’s important that the bass and kick drum work together for a solid groove – that doesn’t mean that every kick drum needs a bass note on it but if you can largely work together then you’re onto a winner.

Why did you choose Spector basses as your main weapon of choice?

I’ve been playing Spectors for around 10 years now. Aside from the aesthetics (especially of the natural wood models!), I love their tone and the onboard preamp gives you a huge range of possibilities. They aren’t the cheapest but the built quality is great and after the number of gigs I’ve done on them, they’re still going strong so it’s a great investment.

What advice would you give bassists that are getting into bands and want to start playing live?

Take every opportunity you get given because you never know quite how things may come round in circles. What might seem like a wasted gig might have had one person there that will influence the rest of your career, you just never know. Be professional and ditch any ego and hopefully you’ll go far.

What are your thoughts on playing the bass with your fingers as opposed to with a pick?

Both have their merit – you need to know what sound you’re trying to achieve and go with whichever gives you the best results. I find that any distorted bass sounds tend to work better with a pick and often an octave pedal will track better but personally, I prefer playing with my fingers because I can get more subtlety and control into my playing.

Do you and the rest of the guys in Don Broco listen to the same music?

What’s on your Spotify playlist at the moment?

Funnily enough, we don’t really seem to align on our current musical tastes. We can all agree on the greats and the ones we grew up with but it’s a real mixed bag these days which is great because it gives a real variety to what influences our writing.

What’s been the highlight of your career and what does the future hold for Don Broco?

We’re incredibly lucky to be doing what we’re doing and to see so much of the world and so the highlights are constantly updating with each tour or gig we do. We embark upon our biggest ever UK headline tour next February and capping it all off at Wembley Arena which is set to be a really special gig. I’m not sure any of us realised when we started playing in bands that this would be remotely possible so to actually have a date in the diary is incredible.

Quick-fire questions:

• P bass or Jazz bass? P for feel, Jazz for tone! (Cop out!)
• 4-string or 5-string bass? Always 5 – it’s all about that low-end flexibility.
• Best bass strings and gauge? Something Stainless Steel that is bright and zingy – the Ernie Ball Slinkys or Dunlop Super Brights are both great.
• Jaco Pastorius or Victor Wooten? Jaco, but both incredible.
• Active or passive? Active.

Following an interesting discussion here at Andertons HQ, each and every one of us has that one piece of gear they wish they had bought when they had the chance! Hindsight is a wonderful thing, isn’t it?

As the old saying goes, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure and I love reading/hearing the old wives’ tales about equipment through the years. It’s what makes musicians, well, musicians so here goes nothing…

It was 2004 and I was the ripe old age of 15 when I went in to my then local guitar store Nevada Music. This Gecko Burst Les Paul immediately caught my eye. I was a fan of anything slightly unusual and I didn’t think twice about asking one of the chaps to reach it down from above the counter for me (that’s how I knew it was special, and subsequently expensive) to rather unfittingly play some RATM on.

I’d been ‘saving’ for my first proper guitar for what felt like forever, but the price tag (from memory about £1,300) was way out of my reach. My old man offered to make up the rather large shortfall in return for helping him work on Saturdays to pay back my debts and for whatever reason I politely declined.

That very guitar is now as rare as rocking horse sh*t and I’ve never forgiven myself for not buying it.

Gibson ES-335 Black Satin

I was working in the guitar dept. at the shop when I first came across the satin Black ES-335. It’s not rare to see a satin ES-335 in other colours but for some reason, Gibson discontinued the black one and that’s the exact one I wanted! I remember not buying one because I thought they’d be around forever. They look way too cool to get chopped from the production line. I was so wrong.

My plan was to buy it and swap out the pickups for Lollartron Traditional pickups and retrofit a Duesenberg Trem and turn this into a guitar with serious attitude. The tone I had in my head was Gibson Satin Black ES-335 > EarthQuaker Devices Hoof Fuzz > EHX POG2 > Orange Rockerverb 100w head with an Eventide ambient verb in the effects loop. The plan I had was to play the guitar until the satin became shiny and beaten up. Then I’d form a band in the style of Queens Of The Stoneage and take over the world.

The guitar might not be special in the eyes of others but it was the perfect blend of gritty, classy and customizable.

Takamine Lefty EG523SC Jumbo acoustic

Before I worked for Andertons – maybe 6 or 7 years ago, actually – I popped into the shop for a casual browse as I often did. As a southpaw, browsing guitars was always a torturous experience wherever I went – but I came across a Takamine Jumbo acoustic, possibly an EG523SC, and couldn’t resist having a go. It played beautifully, sounded great, and was surprisingly comfortable for its size.

The internal conflict rose in me – to buy or not to buy – but I suppressed it, instead making a note of the model number and vowing to consider a purchase in the future. Sadly, the guitar was discontinued shortly after, never to be seen again. Since that fateful day, steel-string acoustics have never been the same for me…

Brook Guitars Bovey

There is a tiny guitar shop just behind Northcote Road in Clapham called Guitar Classics. I lived nearby for years and regularly went in and play some absolutely fantastic guitars. One day they had a second hand Bovey – A short scale 14 fret acoustic guitar handmade by British manufacturer Brook Guitars. It was the most amazing sounding acoustic guitar I have ever played and was absolutely beautiful. It was an absolute steal at £750 and I stupidly didn’t buy it. Have wanted a Brook guitar ever since.

Fender John Mayer Strat

I’m a self-confessed Mayer fan-boy! When I started working here almost 5 years ago we stocked the John Mayer Signature Strat. It played lovely, with its fat neck and signature scooped-mid ‘Big Dipper’ pickups, which are unavailable to buy on their own (boo!).

When the time came for me to buy a new strat and trying to steer away from cloning Mayer’s gear, I opted for a Fender USA Standard with a maple neck. It’s done me proud, but almost 5 years on I still regret the day I let the Mayer sig get away, and now they’re not made anymore. You can usually find them knocking around on sellers sites, so I’ve not given up hope just yet! Maybe when John comes to do a Captain Meets one day he’ll give me one…

In summary…

Have you ever tried something out only to wish that years later you invested? We’d love to hear your stories!

Perhaps next I’ll write a follow up about the equipment you wish you’d never sold – let’s be honest, we’ve all been there! Probably a good time to check out our second-hand guitars as some poor bugger has probably let go of something he/she will later regret!

Let’s dive into some Mastodon tones

You’ll know that Mastodon have achieved some of the biggest guitar tones on the planet in the last few years and have even gone against the rulebook when it comes to metal guitar tone. They generally use heavy drop-tunings but on normal scale guitars. This is an interesting approach because their amp and pedal setup gives them a tighter bass and low-mid response yet in theory, tuning low on a normal scale guitar should sound more ‘flabby’ than normal. But this helps Mastodon achieve a loose sludgy feel with a tighter low-end than you’d expect.

Rather than scoop the mids, Mastodon make sure that their guitar sound has plenty of mid dialled in. This is so that the guitar will be heard under all that distortion. They use British style amps to achieve this and crank the amps (and the gain) up to 11. As for effects, they tend to dial in loads of different tones (Especially modulations, reverbs and delays) with the axe-fx but an Octave pedal and a TS-style overdrive will get you close.

Please remember that these sounds haven’t been endorsed by Mastodon and we are just offering some advice on how to get similar guitar sounds. Also, never follow the rulebook and feel free to take these guidelines a step further and create your own sound.

Guitars

Bill Kelliher Guitar Sound

To nail that heavy Bill Kelliher tone you need a fat sounding, LP style guitar. Fortunately this is easily achieved with his two signature ESP guitars. We’ve chosen his singlecut LTD BK-600 which has a familiar feel and design to other LTD guitars but with a very big difference at it’s heart. The pickups. These are hot without being super modern or scooped sounding. In fact they’ve got a mid-range sweet spot that works well with his Friedman Butterslax amp to give you an aggressive, throaty mid-range sound with an open, dynamic low-end. Perfect for drop-tunings and especially good with the high gain channel cranked on your amp.

Kelliher has got another signature LTD which is called the Sparrowhawk for the more open-minded player. This offset body shape has similar spec to his BK600 but with Divinator pickups instead which are slightly lower resistance pickups but still retaining plenty of heat! To get in the Kelliher ballpark you’ll want a meaty sounding guitar like the LTDs with clear sounding medium/hot pickups. This is what will give you the clarity you want under all that gain!

Brent Hinds Guitar Sound

Brent Hinds is a famous Gibson user. He’s been seen using everything from Flying Vs to SGs and Les Pauls! He even has a signature Epiphone Flying V which was designed to give you his powerful signature tone. Go for a guitar with powerful passive pickups and enough mid-range sizzle to cut through loads of gain.

Amps

Bill Kelliher Amp Sound

It’s no secret that Mastodon use bucketloads of gain on their guitar tones. But what is interesting is how they still retain note definition! The easiest way to nail Kellihers amp tone is by using his signature Friedman Butterslax amp.

He uses channel 3 so that he can really pile on the distortion. The Butterslax is a tight sounding 100w head, so you’ll want to avoid any flabby low frequencies (Especially with the lower tunings) if you decide to use something different. It’s powered by 4x EL34 tubes which give you that classic British sizzle but with all of the modern low-end you need.

Brent Hinds Amp Sound

Rabea chose the Victory VX Kraken to get the Brent Hinds sound. By using channel 1 (The ‘British’ side of the amp) he was able to achieve that signature fatness that Mastodon get. But in a similar way to Bill Kelliher, Brent Hinds doesn’t lose clarity by cranking the gain and scooping the mids. Instead, he keeps the gain up and uses high output pickups (With a present mid-range) to get that brutal tone.

Brent Hinds currently uses a JMP and a Diezel to get his tone so if you want to be spot on then you’ll want to have a healthy dose of British overdrive with powerful German distortion. Why not try the Diezel VH4 Preamp/Overdrive pedal into a clean amp to get that tone?

Pedals

Bill Kelliher Pedals

v
The octave is there to fatten up the low-end and beef up any rhythm tones. Traditionally you wouldn’t use it over your lead tones. But by dialling in octave onto your dry signal (This is easy to do with something like the EHX nano POG,POG2 or Boss Super Octave) you can add chunky bass notes without making your tone muddy.

Having reverb on the tone will warm up your signal and make those octave sounds a little bit bigger. You can add reverb to taste depending on the tone, but just remember that having a dry signal will make your tone ‘tighter’ and more in your face. You can use anything from the MXR Reverb to the Boss RV-6

Brent Hinds Pedals

Any TS-style mid-range overdrive (Try the Maxon 808 or an Ibanez Tubescreamer) will be useful for getting the Brent Hinds tone. Turn the gain all the way down and set the tone where you want it and just watch how it tightens up the low-end on your dirty channel. Rabea found that adding a Klon style pedal (RYRA Klone) into the mix works wonders for the Mastodon tone. It adds a touch more gain but also saturates the sound a bit which’ll just help in fattening those riffs and tones.

For EQ Pedals Something like the BOSS GE-7 will just allow you to take out some of the high-mid and remove any fizz that you might have from running so much gain.

It’s worth having a delay and reverb (or combo pedal) in your effects loop or at the end of your chain to warm up those lead sounds. Having the delay and reverb on for the single note runs will give your tone space in the mix and give it width. Again, this makes your guitar sounding bigger and more powerful. For an example listen to the solo on Oblivion and you’ll easily get an idea of how reverb and delay should sound. The Earthquaker Dispatch Master was an easy way to fatten up the Brent sound.
