Limited Run Gibson Custom Shop Guitars

Gibson have been regularly launching new, limited run models throughout 2017.
We are staying on top of what’s coming in, but if one catches your eye then you better be quick, because these guitars are highly-limited!

The Les Paul Standard is exactly what its name suggests. It’s the Standard which all Les Pauls are compared against. This is Gibson's flagship model, and captures everything that there is to love about the iconic Les Paul.

These are limited run models of the Les Paul Standard, made by the Gibson Custom Shop division. They have modern-sounding Burstbucker pickups that stay true to the tone that you’d expect from a Les Paul - warm and fat-sounding, especially when played with a bit of drive! The chambered body is light and incredibly resonant.

If you’re a guitar player, then the chances are pretty high that you’ve heard of the famous Gibson Les Paul Standard. It’s their flagship model and represents everything that Gibson stand for in terms of look, feel and most importantly, sound!

Traditionally, the Les Paul Standard has been made by the U.S.A factory that builds guitars like the Flying V, the Les Paul Studio and Traditional as well as SG’s and Explorers.

But Gibson have started building the Custom Shop Standard as an ode to their flagship model. However, these are a little bit different.

These are traditionally spec’d guitars that are made using some of the older techniques that would have been used to build guitars in the 50’s. For example, the wood is put together using a hide glue which – after time – allows the guitar to sustain and resonate better than modern glues would.

How? Well, modern glues create a barrier between the two objects and holds them together. But hide glues actually forms part of the 2 substances it holding together which means more sustain & more resonance!

Plain Top, Flame Top & Gold Top Les Pauls

You may be familiar with the history of the Les Paul and know that traditionally, 57 models had a Gold Top, 58 models were Plain Tops and 59 models are generally Flame Top models. Similarly, these Les Paul standards have those options.

Not only do these guitars have a VOS finish but they also have plastics from the True Historic line. These plastics have been carefully re-created to be exactly the same as the plastics used on guitars in the 50s.

Don’t confuse the VOS finish with an aged or reliced guitar. VOS is more like you put the guitar in a case for 50 years and when you pull it out, it’s still immaculate but slightly faded and the hardware is slightly worn. This is easily the most popular finish in the Gibson Custom line.

This Limited Run ES-335 pays tribute to the ES-335s of old that have been battered and bruised and still feel and sound amazing!

The heavy relic is done beautifully and only in places where a guitar would actually age. And the 57 Classics round off the vintage feel of this guitar.

The Gibson CS-336 is a semi-hollow with a difference. Instead of the maple/poplar/maple laminate that you normally see on Gibson semi-hollows, this guitar has an all Mahogany body with the F-holes chambered out. This gives you a different tone to an ES-335 – slightly darker and more woody sounding with a similar sustain to a Les Paul.

The 57 Classic pickups give the guitar a PAF-style sonic signature. Not to mention the stunning figured top.

Les Paul Custom

Take the 1950’s archetype, update it into a guitar that can cope with the modern demands of today’s players and you’ll end up with the Les Paul Custom.

A 490/498 humbucker set and a long neck tenon for maximum sustain really allow this guitar to sing. With a Maple top and Mahogany back to give you that classic Les Paul grunt!

Les Paul Axcess Custom

The Les Paul Axcess Custom takes everything you love about the classic Les Paul, but is modernised with higher output pickups and an incredible-feeling neck.

Not to mention the Axcess neck joint, which is carved to comfortably allow you to nail every note all the way up to the 22nd fret. In a unique Rhino Gray Gloss finish and with gold hardware, this Custom model combines class with supreme playability.

The Gibson Johnny A Custom is a semi-hollow guitar without an F-hole, giving you a unique tone similar to models like the ES-335 with a more subtle and refined aesthetic.

Instead of the maple/poplar/maple laminate found on the ES-335, this guitar has a spruce top similar to what you would find on an acoustic guitar. And even though you can get warm, acoustic-esque tones from this guitar, it takes on a different shape when used with overdrive pedals – warm and airy sounding with a lovely mid-range bite!

Though not necessarily made for rock, this guitar really shines when plugged into a lovely clean amp for smooth jazzy tones.

The Gibson Custom Shop have unveiled their vintage and road-worn beauties with these ‘Painted Over’ Les Pauls. The aged nitrocellulose paint, cream scratch plate and binding are just the tip of the iceberg.

Each guitar is painted in one colour, completely. Whether that be sunburst or plain black or gold. The guitar is then refinished completely in a new colour. Only once that has happened will Gibson age the guitar which gives you a unique colour combination.

This means you'll have one colour revealed under the aging. And as the guitar ages, more of the bottom layer colour will shine through.

Features

  • Custom bucker (Alnico III) pickups for stunning, modern Les Paul tones.
  • These Guitars have Hide Glue construction including the top join.
  • The plastics are from the True Historic Spec.
  • The guitars include an Aged Case.

There's a limited number of these so if you fancy one, you better get in quick!

Still as fast-playing as ever and keeping all of the charm of an SG, it’s had a face-lift with some iconic Custom aesthetics! Add two powerful humbuckers to a slick, ebony nitrocellulose finish and multi-ply appointments and you’re looking at a super-classy, rock n’ roll beast!

The Gibson Custom Shop teased a double cut guitar at a trade show recently and after receiving an insane amount of attention online, they’ve released the Custom Shop Double Cut.

It's got the standard Gibson 24.75″ scale length but with 24 frets for a 2 octave range. And the double cutaway makes upper fret access easy. Apart from the new look and the incredible colours available, this is a limited Gibson guitar. But it retains the much-loved Mahogany back and Maple top formula with the sweet-sounding 57 Classic pickups.

So whilst the guitar might look like a completely new shape, it does still have that incredible Gibson grunt and punch that you’d expect.
