2: Using a Metal Zone as a Buffer
Having lengthy signal chains or numerous pedals can result in ‘tone suck’. As the term may suggest, this is when your tone loses character and clarity due to being interrupted or stretched too far. This is where buffering comes in.
So what is a buffer pedal? Buffer pedals aim to reinforce your signal to prevent loss of volume or clarity. They prevent AC (alternating current) from entering a circuit, thus preventing your signal from being interrupted or affected. A stronger, clearer signal means better sound – it’s as simple as that. Boss pedals all have buffered bypass circuitry built-in, meaning that when they’re bypassed, they still act as buffers.
So in short: having an MT-2 on your pedalboard will give you a stronger signal, even if it’s switched off. Who’d have thought?
3: Modding the Metal Zone
While pedal modding may sound daunting to a novice, pedals wouldn’t be what they are without it. Many manufacturers started off modifying classic pedals, some of which went on to become household names in the field.
The Boss MT-2 is notoriously popular for modding, for a couple of reasons. First of all, it’s fairly straightforward – more so now than ever, as many companies offer simple modding kits that you can buy online. Secondly, that out-the-box sound is just begging to be tweaked. As mentioned above, spending time with the controls makes a huge difference. But for the more adventurous gearheads among us, the temptation to pop the MT-2 open and play around with its insides is irresistible…
4: Famous Boss Metal Zone users
Don’t take it from us – take it from the major players who actually use it! Both as a cause and effect of the MT-2’s notoriety, a number of major players use it or have used it in their setups. Whether for a novelty screaming distortion or as a pivotal live rig component, the Metal Zone always finds a place. Here’s a handful of notable users:
- Simon Neil, Biffy Clyro (below)– the inked Scotsman has used his Metal Zone on every Biffy record to date. In a video interview with That Pedal Show, he professed that he still uses one alongside his MD-2 Mega Distortion in his live rig. Mega indeed.
- Brian ‘Head’ Welch & James ‘Munky’ Shaffer, Korn – the undisputed titans of the nu-metal genre both use MT-2s on their live boards. They’ve also reportedly used them in the studio for those moments that require extra fizz.
- Kurt Ballou, Converge – Kurt’s use of the Metal Zone is a great example of creative pedal use. In the studio, he reportedly rolled off the gain and flatted the EQ, instead cranking the volume to push the front of his amp. Listen to a Converge track and it’ll all make sense.
- Rod Jones, Idlewild – Edinburgh rockers Idlewild don’t do metal, but that’s no excuse. Guitarist Rod Jones has used the MT-2 to fatten up the band’s anthemic choruses in the past, much like Biffy Clyro.
- Dan Donegan, Disturbed – another example of great use of the Metal Zone’s powerful EQ. Donegan rolls off the low end and tweaks the mids for a lo-fi radio sound, perfect for song intros and instrumental breaks.
5: Boss Have Sold Almost 1 Million Metal Zones!
This number makes the Metal Zone one of Boss’ best-selling pedals of all time. This is generally attributed to one of three things:
- It’s a common first pedal. You know the drill; you have a cheap practice amp, a cheap Les Paul copy, and you want to sound like Metallica. What’s the quickest and cheapest route? A distortion pedal. And which one do you go for? Obviously the gnarly black and orange one that says ‘Metal Zone’ on it.
- It has a few tricks up its sleeve. As we’ve already covered in this article, the MT-2 has got a little more going on that it’d first seem. Powerful EQ, buffered bypass, a great platform for modding. As a result, it’s gained a cult following of dedicated MT-2 disciples.
- This is perhaps the biggest contributor of all! The infamous fizzy sound, the cool enclosure, the borderline-sarcastic name, the cult following, the famous users. The Metal Zone has caused a stir since day one – which is why it continues to sell!
