Fledgling virtuoso Marikit Akiwumi, only 12-years-old, is to play the role of bassist Katie in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical School of Rock on their UK & Ireland tour, having picked up the bass guitar for the first time ever at Andertons Music Co.
Marikit was asked to prepare a handful of riffs and technical exercises for her first audition in July 2019. Lacking experience with the four-stringed instrument, Marikit and her father, Tony, came to Andertons for help. We set her up with the perfect short-scale Ibanez bass to suit her smaller stature.
At just 12-years-old, the world is her oyster
The Akiwumi family were also delighted to find a familiar face in Max Harrison, Marikit and her brother Makisig’s first acoustic guitar teacher, working in the Andertons customer service team. Max recalled how dedicated they were to their lessons and was not surprised she got the part.
Marikit successfully navigated the audition process and was offered the role of Katie in November 2020. As her passion for the bass guitar grew, they returned several times for our expert guidance and subsequently bought more basses, including an advanced fretless model.
Managing Partner Lee Anderton, said: “Andertons have been making musicians since we were founded by my grandfather in 1964. We are thrilled for Marikit and her amazing achievements and are honoured to play a part in her journey so far.
“At just 12-years-old, the world is her oyster. We wish her all the best for the upcoming tour and hope she can go on to have an incredible musical career.”
The talented youngster has already completed her Grade 8 RSL Bass Guitar and Acoustic Guitar exams, as well as her grade 7 RSL Vocal exam, passing with flying colours.
The School of Rock tour continues at the New Victoria Theatre, Woking, September 28 – October 2, 2021.
