Ever seen a Fender Strat or Tele that looks a little different from the norm, maybe with a rare finish, unusual pickups, or eye-catching appointments? You might just have stumbled upon an FSR model! Short for ‘Fender Special Run’, these guitars and basses offer unique spins on classic Fender designs, produced in limited quantities and often exclusive to certain retailers.

Whether you’re a collector, a mod-loving player, or just looking for something a little different, Fender FSR guitars are where creativity and rarity collide. But what exactly are FSR guitars, and what makes them so special? Let’s take a closer look.

What are Fender FSR Guitars?

Fender is every bit the same boundary-pushing company as they were in the 1950s, and their FSR Series is the proof. You’ve no doubt seen Fender’s extensive standard guitar ranges, as well as all their amps and pedals, but they’re a creative bunch and like to spice up those stock designs from time to time. FSR is where they bring their coolest ideas to life!

FSR stands for ‘Fender Special Run’, and it does exactly what it says on the tin. The Fender team switch out the components of their classic instruments with fresher, unique features. Where your run-of-the-mill Player Strat consists of a “C”-shaped maple neck, Alder body and stock pickups, an FSR equivalent might opt for a “U”-shaped neck, Basswood body, hotter vintage pickups and a drippy new finish. They essentially bridge the gap between standard Fender runs and the prestigious Fender Custom Shop offerings – custom specs without the hefty price tag!

FSR instruments sometimes come about when retailers make special requests to Fender. Other times, it’s when Fender just fancy doing something a bit different! In either case, all Fender FSR models are made in limited quantities, making them extremely desirable. Who wouldn’t like to own one of only a handful ever made? If you spot one you absolutely must have, don’t wait to make the leap. There’s a good chance Fender won’t make the same model twice!

What Makes Fender FSR Guitars so Special?

Sometimes FSR equates to a straightforward, yet glitzy paint job. Other times, it’s the full “pimp my ride” treatment, adding fancy extras like a Bigsby tremolo on a Tele, making use of third-party pickups, or crafting guitars out of exotic woods. You’re in the right place if you want something different to the norm.

You’ll also be pleased to know that FSR isn’t restricted to only the big-name models like Strats or Teles. You’ve also got FSR Precision and Jazz Basses, Jazzmasters, acoustics, and even ukuleles. What’s The Difference Between Fender FSR & MIJ?

MIJ stands for ‘Made in Japan’. That’s right, Fender doesn’t just operate in the USA and Mexico, but in Eastern Asia too. Retailers outside Asia regularly buy up any overflow of MIJ models, which is why you’ll find these specimens on the other side of the world from where they originate. They’re usually priced between Fender’s Mexican-made instruments and the American Professional II range.

It’s important to note that Fender MIJ instruments are not FSR and do not have one-off features like their FSR counterparts. They adhere to the standardised specs in Japan. MIJ might be a bit different to what we get in Europe and America, but they’re not technically limited run.

The Asian market-preferred specs make Fender MIJ instruments very special. These include the likes of a far more common U-shaped neck and exclusive colours and materials. The woods used are dependent on the species farmed in the region and naturally look different to those from Europe and America.

What does FSR mean in Fender guitars?

FSR stands for “Fender Special Run”. They’re limited-edition guitars or basses made in small batches, featuring nifty extras like unique specs, finishes, or features not found on standard production models.

Are Fender FSR guitars better than standard models?

Better is subjective – but they’re definitely different! FSR guitars often feature upgraded or alternative components, so they can feel or sound distinct from the regular line. Whether or not they’re better depends on what you’re looking for from your guitar.

Are FSR guitars limited edition?

Yes, that’s all part of their appeal. Most FSR models are produced in small runs and may be exclusive to certain retailers. Once they’re gone, they’re usually gone for good.

Do FSR models hold their value?

They can, especially rare or popular ones. Because of their often very limited nature, the best FSR Fender Models tend to be more collectable, which can help them retain (or even increase) in value over time, particularly if kept in great condition.

Are FSR guitars worth it?

José Arredondo: the ‘amp wiz’ responsible for rock & metal’s greatest tones

Widely considered an amp modification OG, José Arredondo made a name for himself working on amps for the rock & metal elite in the 80s and beyond. James Hetfield, Steve Vai, Eddie Van Halen – a real who’s who.

As an amp technician, he earned his stripes working for everyone from Vox to Ampeg, eventually starting up his own amp repair & modification workshop. Dave Friedman considers Arredondo’s subsequent mods to be precursors to many modern Marshall-inspired amps – including Friedman themselves.

For Dave, Arredondo was more than a mysterious figure tweaking amps for A-list guitarists – he was a personal acquaintance. He recalls getting his own amp modded at Arredondo’s workshop:

“I had the pleasure of having an amplifier modified when I was about 18 years at his house, here in Sherman Oaks at the time. His shop was there, all the amps everywhere, a striped Eddie Van Halen on the wall – you had to move sideways through all the rubble! He was awesome.”

Rock music wouldn’t have sounded how it sounded if Jose hadn’t modded these guitar amplifiers.

The Friedman Jose amp – what we know so far

Dave has worked on over 100 Jose-modded amps over the years, so he knows them inside out. Who better then to build an amp to commemorate the legend, complete with the blessing of his family? Here’s what we know about the Friedman Jose amp so far:

At its core, it’s a 4-input 100W Marshall-style head with bass and treble channels
Multiple versions of Arredondo’s mod in a single head, based on his favourites from the 1968-75 era
Two different style presence circuits: N presence (more mid-focused character) and V presence (vintage Marshall, very bright)
Improved master volume switching: pre-EQ master volume with clipping diodes (later popularised by Cameron, Fortin etc.)
Bypassable FX loop

From May 2023, the new CEO of NAMM John Mlynczak has worked tirelessly to convince the big players to return to NAMM to help be part of its glorious return. As a result, Fender & Gibson will both be attending NAMM 2025 in a BIG way, which means that something BIG must be happening. This time round, the price point we’ve explored is £120-£180. But for the uninitiated, what does closed-back actually mean? Well, put simply, this kind of design helps to stop noise from leaking through your headphones. This is particularly useful when you’re recording, as it means any microphones within earshot won’t pick up any sound from your headphones. This will help you to get as clean a take as possible.

Our list covers headphones from some of the most respected names in the business – from Audio Technica and Beyerdynamic, to Sennheiser and Austrian Audio. We were so impressed in fact, that we’ve even included Rode’s very first foray into the headphone space! Each pair on this page was put through a rigorous round of testing to determine their level of quality. How We Rated the Headphones:

The Andertons team gathered together to rate these headphones and give you as many opinions as possible, not only the ones from our experts from the Pro-Audio team. We selected 20 people from our staff members from different departments, from drums to mail order and gave them the headphone to try and test.

There were 3 main categories we measured, we then took the average score from each category to see which one came out on top. The 3 categories went as follows:

Comfort – We consider how comfortable they feel on our heads! Considering the size of them, how the cushions fit our ears and how comfortable the material is, this is to make sure they’re good for extended use!

Sound quality – Here we’re looking as to how they generally sound, thinking about the frequency response and how they sound dynamically. In addition to this, we compare the sound against other headphones in the price range to see which one comes out on top!

Build quality – For this, we look at the general sturdiness of the headphones and what material they’re made from. While this also ties into the comfort of the headphones, we check to make sure they’re fit for the demands expected of them!

When doing these rankings, we took the price point into account. In our analysis, we focused on the range £40 – £70, to ensure we were comparing models in the same price/quality tier and kept you well informed!
