Valeton GP-150 Features

Built around Valeton’s 2nd Generation HD software, the GP-150 and GP-180 are built for players who demand an all-around modelling platform with hardware that’s equally comfortable on stage, in the studio or at home. The smorgasbord of versatile controls in partnership with their stunning 2.4” HD LCD colour screen ensures that using and editing on the GP-150 and 180 feels fluid and effortless. The GP-150 features 2 footswitches as well as a built-in expression pedal for enhanced creativity without the need to plug in additional controller pedals.

Valeton GP-180 Features

Moreover, the GP-150 and the GP-180 both feature all the same updates and innovations, with the GP-180 offering a few more control options as a bonus for the lack of a built-in expression pedal found on the 150. With an overall width of 18.1cm, the GP-180 is a hair more compact than its expression pedal-equipped counterpart. It’s also a touch lighter too, weighing only 843g. This perhaps makes it the overall better choice for bite-sized rigs. There is a welcome addition of 10 module shortcut buttons on the face of the pedal, as well as an additional footswitch. Unlike the GP-150, the 180 features a fully analogue bypass as well as the DSP bypass found on the 150. The GP-180 can also support footswitch MIDI commands.

Battery Powered

The built-in 3000mAh Li-ion battery in the GP-150 and 180 provides over 6 hours of runtime with the screen brightness set to level 2. Meaning that on a single charge, there is ample power for sound check, warm up and the show. It also means there is more than enough juice for practising on the go without the need for mains power. Alternatively, the GP-150 and GP-180 can be powered by a standard 9V DC pedal power supply or with a 5V USB-C cable.

GP-150 vs. GP-180 vs. GP-5

The GP-5 is the perfect introduction to the Valeton platform. It’s powered by the same effortless software (albeit an app is required to really unlock its full potential), has the same incredible sounds and is built to the same high standards as its pricier siblings. That said, it does have its limitations. Its smaller screen, single footswitch, minimal onboard controls, lack of looper and reduced features, effects and storage do limit its standalone functionality, especially when used as a live stage tool.

Although they do share so much in common, comparing the GP-5 to either the GP-150 or the GP-180 is largely unfair, as to me, they both serve very different purposes. The GP-5, as previously mentioned, is the perfect gateway into the Valeton ecosystem. It’s the cheapest pedal in the range and is a great way of getting hands-on with modelling for the first time. The GP-5 is also the perfect Plan B rig. With its pocket-sized footprint, it couldn’t be easier to pre-program a handful of your core tones and effects and keep it tucked away in a gig bag or pedalboard pocket, ready for if ever the worst ever did happen.

GP-150 vs. GP-180 vs. GP-50

The GP-50 shares a very similar feature set to the GP-5 in terms of power and storage; however, things have been taken up a level with increased controls, a second footswitch, a looper, and onboard editing capabilities. With its built-in looper, 1,450 mAh battery and integrated drum machine, the Valeton GP-50 has quickly earned a reputation as being the ultimate, affordable digital modelling home, and on-the-go and practise setup.

However, when put side by side against the GP-150 or the GP-180, you quickly see why these new models have the edge compared to the GP-50. With its larger screen size, increased controls, better sample rate and signal-to-noise ratio, increased effect chain modules, larger battery, improved I/O and bigger storage, it’s easy to see how the GP-150 and 180 lend themselves to more professional environments.

GP-150 vs. GP-180 vs. GP-200

The GP-200 is built for performance. It’s bigger, more powerful, has more features and is generally built with just about everything you could ever need for stage or studio. Comprising of 2 models, the GP-200 and GP-200LT (a slimmed-down, more portable version of the standard version), the GP-200 takes pride of place as Valeton’s flagship model.

While not as big, powerful or feature-packed as the GP-200, the GP-150 and 180 offer a good compromise between portability and performance. Especially thanks to the built-in 3000mAh rechargeable Li-ion battery that the 150/180 features.

Which Valeton GP Multi-FX Processor is for me?

I think it’s fair to say that every pedal in the Valeton GP series has truly earned its place in the GP lineup. I think that the GP-5, GP50, and GP-200 all cover specific jobs within the range, with the 5 and 50 largely covering home and practise and the 200 taking care of stage and studio.

The Valeton GP-150 and GP-180 perfectly offer a jack-of-all-trades workhorse effect processor, perfect for guitarists after one piece of kit that can do it all from home to stage and everywhere in between.

If you’re new to guitar or modelling and are just after an affordable workhorse to get you going, then either the GP-5 or GP50 would be an excellent choice. Within the guitar community, there has always been a divide between players, some continuously striving for innovation and development, while others are firmly grounded in the roots of tradition.

Arguably, the biggest innovation and change to the 6-string guitar is the near-instant success of the Fender Telecaster in 1950. The first commercially available solid-body electric guitar. But even after this gargantuan change to guitar, music and even society following this invention, Fender has always had to maintain the balance of keeping one eye pressed forward while the other firmly back.

For many, finding the perfect middle ground between new and old has always been the objective with electric guitar design. Like fashion, art and automotives, most people, new and old, have a particular soft spot for these old and ‘retro’ designs as well as a deep appreciation for the unmistakable tone and vibe that they offer. Fender American Professional Classic vs. Fender American Professional II

Designed with the wants and needs of modern players, the Fender American Professional II models feature Fender’s V-Mod II pickups, providing iconic Fender tones but enhanced to offer a fuller frequency response. This enables them to excel at more contemporary genres and playing styles and work seamlessly with the latest rigs. They have an ergonomic feeling Deep C neck profile with 9.5” and Narrow Tall frets, and also feature a specially sculpted neck heel for effortless playability all the way up the fingerboard. The hardware has been designed with comfort and stability in mind, and the range is offered in a vast array of updated colours.

In a similar vein, the American Pro Classic guitars and basses feature a Modern C neck profile for a modern and ergonomic playing experience. Launched in 2025, the Fender American Ultra Luxe Vintage range is an alternative solution to basically the same problem, however, done in a slighter higher spec’d way. Again, perfectly fusing vintage with modern, the Ultra Luxe Vintage series features their acclaimed Pure Vintage pickups as well as stunning, vintage-accurate nitrocellulose lacquer finishes, sympathetically aged in their Heirloom relic styling. Unlike the American Pro Classic models, the Ultra Luxe Vintage comes equipped with modern hardware with locking tuners for pinpoint accuracy, and each model features Fender’s enhanced ‘Ultra’ contours and neck heel recess. The neck is also carved to a Modern D profile with a compound radius for even more ergonomic enrichment.

 

Fender American Professional Classic vs. Fender American Vintage II

Built for the purists, the Fender American Vintage II series is Fender’s most faithful vintage-accurate recreation of some of their most desirable and well-loved designs from their famed ‘golden era’. Other than the inclusion of a convenient 5-way pickup selector on the Strat models, these guitars and basses are as near an exact replica as Fender USA can get. Featuring all era-correct pickups, hardware and components and built using vintage accurate woods and finishes with exact contours and neck profiles, these instruments are for those who swear that Leo got things right the very first time!

Although it’s hard to argue that many of the best and most sought-after guitar tones come from vintage or at least vintage-styled instruments, there is no denying that this style of instruments can sometimes fall short regarding performance-focused playing styles. The vintage neck profiles can feel large and clunky, and the 7.25” fingerboard radius is prone to choking out with bigger bends. The Fender American Professional Classic series negates these issues by offering a classic-sounding and looking instrument with the addition of a performance-ready modern neck.

 

Conclusion

Taking place as Fender’s entry point into their prestigious American-made line-up, the Fender American Professional Classic ticks a lot of boxes. In my opinion, their combination of classic looks, authentic tone and modern playability in conjunction with their accessible (compared to other American-made instruments) price point truly makes this range stand out as a perfect vintage-inspired, versatile, high-performance workhorse.

Playing them, there is an overall feeling of reliability and stability, just like I find whenever I pick up an American-made Fender. I love how the neck feels, especially due to its satin finish and I really think that Fender has nailed it with the Coastline pickups. They sound like a real Fender should and manage to rise perfectly to every situation thrown at them, no matter how much tone alteration I throw at them with gain and effects.

Conclusion

For over 10 years, the Duchess has been a flagship workhorse amp for those after a high-headroom pedal platform valve amp. In my opinion, the MK II improvements are very welcome additions to the family, pushing the range even closer to the features found on the hand-wired flagship MK-Clean amp. The expanded 3-way voice and mid kick switch takes the versatility of these amps to a whole new level and really lets you dial in a more ‘colourful’ core tone that truly helps you find ‘your sound’. Having an amp that can go from fully transparent and open to just about every shade of colour from American to British in a few clicks of a switch is, in my opinion, the biggest feature of the Duchess MK II. I’m also really glad to see that these great features have, this time, made their way fully to the more compact models, meaning that every Duchess MK II user can experience its unique versatility. The improved spring reverb circuit taken directly from MK-Clean is beyond beautiful. It’s Accutronics’ medium-sized tank is the perfect complement to the Duchess MK II, offering a valve-driven reverb that seamlessly integrates into any playing style.

What is the Heirloom Finish?

Capturing a similar vibe to the Custom Shop Closet Classic finish, the Heirloom finish showcases the natural, eye-catching ageing that happens to instruments finished in Nitrocellulose Lacquer. There are no major scratches or wear marks; however, there is a beautiful, subtle chequered patina that can be seen if admired close up. In essence, it’s like a real vintage guitar from the ‘50s or ‘60s that’s been carefully stored away under the bed or in a closet. Not only does the chequing display a bucket load of rock and roll mojo, but also due to the natural porous qualities of Nitro finishes, the guitar is able to ‘breathe’ more, therefore resulting in a more overall naturally resonant guitar.

Fender Ultra Luxe Vintage Stratocaster

 

 

The Ultra Luxe Vintage Stratocaster is offered in ‘50s, ‘60s or HSS ‘60s variations. The ‘50s Strat comes with either a beautifully grained, open-sounding Ash body elegantly finished in White Blonde or with an Alder body finished in a classic Sunburst. Both feature a Maple neck and Pure Vintage ’57 pickups for bell-like chime.

The ‘60s and ‘60s HSS versions feature Alder bodies with stunning dark Rosewood fingerboards. They are offered in a selection of classic ‘60s custom colours including Fiesta Red, Surf Green, Ice Blue Metallic and Sea Foam Green. Fender Ultra Luxe Vintage Vs. Fender American Vintage II

The Fender American Vintage II guitars and basses are built top to bottom for the purists! Minus the addition of a ‘modern’ 5-way pickup selector switch on the Stratocaster models, these instruments are built to be as near an exact replica as Fender USA can get. Featuring era-correct neck profiles with 7.25” fingerboard radii, vintage styled fret wire and authentic hardware, these instruments are for those who live and breathe the organic electric guitar tones of the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s and for those who feel without any doubt that Leo got it right the first time! To some though, these golden-era workhorses are quite literally a horse and cart in an age of high-speed modern convenience. Vintage neck profiles and vintage frets are not known for their ergonomic feel, and 7.25” fingerboards are renowned for choking out with extreme modern bends. It can also be hard for vintage-styled hardware and tuners to keep up with the accuracy found in more modern variations. In short, there’s a reason why, as modern music got more technical, so did the guitars.

When Fender began reissuing the classics in the 1980s, they decided that it was however still important to continue a line of instruments dedicated to the pursuit of modern perfection and innovation. Focusing more on ergonomics, playability and tones to suit a wider range of genres, including the latest high-gain trends, these models moved tradition aside to offer Fender’s most modern and versatile models. His goal was to craft a guitar that could rival even the most sought-after and well-known guitars from around the world and produce an instrument that provided the same shimmering tones, rich resonance and easy playability heard on countless records of the time. Today, Furch Guitars is one of the most prominent and highly regarded guitar manufacturers in the world. Lovingly handcrafted in the Czech Republic, Furch Guitars are renowned for their premium tonewood selection, expert craftsmanship and revolutionary designs and innovations such as their CNR Neck Reinforcement System and foldable travel acoustic guitars.

Innovation – The Key to Success

Furch has always been keen to always keep one foot pointing towards the future, always asking how things can be moved forward and how things can be developed. They love the core looks and tone of many of the classic acoustic models and brands, however wanted to build instruments that pushed these classic designs to their absolute maximum potential.

Starting from the ground up, they put every element of the most classic acoustic guitar designs under the microscope and truly deep-dived into what every part did, how it affected tone and what it did to the structural stability. It’s easy to forget that although guitars built in the ‘golden era’ are regarded by many as the ultimate examples of acoustic instruments and building, they were built during a period where many things were done by complete chance and a handful of trial and error. By using modern technology in partnership with modern precision engineering, we can in fact build instruments that push the boundaries of acoustic guitar building.

CNR Neck Reinforcement System

Perhaps the largest challenge that luthiers and acoustic instrument manufacturers have been tackling since day one is striking the perfect balance between strength and flexibility. Creating an instrument that’s rigid enough to withstand stable tension across the strings yet flexible enough to allow for fluid vibration and resonance has always been the ultimate goal in the quest for good tone. The Furch CNR Neck Reinforcement System drops tradition and takes things back to the drawing board, utilising modern materials, engineering, and science. The fully adjustable truss rod is encased within a carbon fibre enclosure, which provides superior rigidity and allows for more accurate and controllable adjustments up and down the entire length of the neck. In addition, a unique support casting made from a specially formulated alloy is placed within the neck heel, providing superior neck-to-body support, which allows for far less internal body support, resulting in more resonance throughout the body.

Improving things even further, the updated Furch CNR System Active takes Furch’s innovative ideas to the next level! By increasing the length of the L-shaped neck support structure by 60mm, Furch has been able to increase the strength and stability of the neck by 45%. This even further improves the overall neck stability and tonal transfer between the strings, neck and body. An expansion element has been placed in the heart of the CNR system to automatically counteract any possible neck movement caused by humidity and ensure that the neck stays exactly how you have set it to be. Finally Furch have developed a simple screw mechanism to quickly adjust at the overall string height without the need to modify the saddle!

Unique Foldable Travel Guitar Design

Another Furch innovation is building an acoustic guitar that can truly go anywhere! The revolutionary Little Jane foldable travel guitar is built for those who require a guitar made for freedom. Like all Furch guitars, the Little Jane is crafted from only premium solid wood, resulting in a highly portable travel guitar that sounds and responds in the same way many traditionally built guitars do. It’s dynamic, full sounding and musical and best of all, it easily and quickly stores away into its backpack-sized case with just a click of a lever at the neck heel and simply pulling the headstock away from the neck.  Its carbon-reinforced truss rod system ensures maximum stability even when stored away without tension.

Booster Soundport

One of the biggest and most well-known developments from Furch is their Booster Soundport. Scientifically engineered to not only create a more immersive playing experience for you as a player but also to unleash the full potential of the resonance and overall tone of the acoustic guitar.

It all started when Furch started to explore the idea that the size of the sound hole may have an impact on the tone and resonance of the guitar. They discovered that there was indeed a direct correlation between hole size and tone, and that actually there was an optimum size dependent on the overall size of the instrument. It was due to the build up of air pressure within the body, and thus, the ability for the soundboard to be able to move (resonate) freely.

With many of their guitars taking inspiration from the classic models from the ‘golden era’ of guitar making, it was important to Furch that they found a way to introduce this idea without dramatically changing the overall appearance of the guitar. They found that the air pressure could be reduced with the introduction of six parallel linear openings on the side of the guitar’s body. This in turn acted like an additional sound hole for the player, creating a more realistic and fuller sound for the musician. Overall, the guitars featuring a Booster Soundport were clearer with more note definition and clarity, louder and overall much more resonant.

After a long absence from Fender’s Mexican-made instruments, Fender is pleased to once again offer the classic feel and sound of a Slab Rosewood fingerboard to the range. Found on many of Fender’s most esteemed models, it is known for its harmonically rich warm tone.

For the first time ever Fender has also included chambered Ash and Mahogany bodies as part of the Strat and Tele line. Available only to some finish options, these variant body materials take inspiration from some of Fender’s historic models and offer a slight twist to Fender’s standard tonal pallet.

In addition, the Player II guitars and basses come available in a fresh batch of never-seen colours from the achieves as well as many of the classic Fender colour choices. Conclusion

When Fender relaunched the Mexican Standard range to the Fender Player series in 2018, it really felt like things had moved up a gear. The satin necks and Alnico pickups were a huge improvement over the previous series.

The Fender Player II truly is taking the range to the next level! It’s hard to put into words how much of a difference the overall playing experience is with rolled fingerboard edges. The experience feels somehow more seamless and less about the instrument in my hands and more about the music it’s helping to create. The Rosewood fingerboards and ClassicGear tuners are very welcome additions to the range as are the revised Jazzmaster and Jaguar pickups.

The Player II Modified is perhaps the icing on the cake to the Player II lineup offering a handful thought-out contemporary twists to a selection of Fenders most popular models. The Noiseless pickups, versatile switching and wiring along with their upgraded hardware makes this range the perfect choice for those who value performance, reliability and tonal adaptability over everything else. They are the perfect choice for covering decades worth of material with only 1 instrument.

Rabea and Music Man launch his anticipated signature Sterling by Music Man Sabre!

For a lot of us, this is the one we’ve been waiting for the most. From the moment Rabea announced his partnership with Music Man he discussed his ambition to not only offer his high end signature models but also to offer a more affordable alternative. Its one the most frequent Rabea based questions we get asked and we are so pleased that the models have finally got the green light!

Right now, not much is actually known however we do know that there will be….

• 2 finish options, (Ashen Burst Burst and Blood Flame Burst).
• Have Rabea’s signature neck profile designed and developed for his higher end Ernie Ball model.
• It will have the spoon cutaway, recessed heel and arm carve.
• High output Alnico 5 humbucker pickups voiced from his signature Bare Knuckle Silos.
• Flamed Maple veneer.
• Roasted Maple Neck with Ebony board and glow in the dark side markers.
• Ring inlays.
• 2 point tremolo system and locking tuners.

We currently don’t have an official launch date or UK price however we do know that the guide price in the US will be $899.99 and we are anticipating a release later in the year. We are so excited about this launch and we are sure you will be too!

Reverend impress with eye-catching display

Reverend were one of the first stands to be set up at NAMM 2025, so we couldn’t resist paying an early visit. Cue a guided tour of their 2025 line-up, including a punchy Floyd-armed signature for Fu Manchu’s Bob Balch, a triple-P90 signature for Ryan Malisci  of Hot Mulligan, delightfully old-meets-new Bigsby Chargers (we’ll take the Venetian Gold, thanks) and some hard-hitting 5-string additions to the Triad bass range. They even teased a new S-style signature for long-time Reverend collaborator Greg Koch, the STUNNING Vernon Reid totem series, and more! Stay tuned on those ones folks…

New Signature Cry Baby Pedals From Dunlop!

It’s a trio of signature models Jim Dunlop’s iconic Cry Baby for 2025. First up, a colourful number honouring the late Mick Ronson, long-time Bowie collaborator and renowned English guitarist whose vintage wah was a crucial component of his sound. At the other end of the spectrum, Sepultura’s Andreas Kisser celebrates 40 years of the Brazilian metal outfit with his own signature wah. Finally, it wouldn’t be a Cry Baby release without Kirk Hammett’s name coming up – the Metallica axeman gets possibly the yellowest pedal we’ve ever seen, tuned for a ferocious midrange & top-end for his free-flowing shred style. Master!

At last year’s NAMM we were lucky to meet Ola Strandberg himself, and were spellbound by their trendsetting headless designs and ethos. So much so that we decided to become a UK Strandberg dealer. Their stand this year is just as exciting, displaying some of their most talked-about signature models and a few unseen releases. The colourful Jacob Collier Djesse (naturally including a 5-string variant) was a particular talking point, though exclusively available direct with Stranderg. We’re also huge fans of the new Boden Futur Archetype models, featuring a gorgeous racing green finish and true-temperament frets. It’ll be another exciting year for the ‘Berg!

For weeks Marshall have been using their socials to tease something big and oh, have they delivered! After much speculation the green light has been lit and Marshall have launched their exciting new range of compact pedals, modified amps as well as finally offering the JCM 900 as as a 20 watt Studio edition! With each offering a flavour of Marshall to suit just about every type of guitarist these lines are definitely ones you don’t want to miss!

• Marshall Compact Pedals – Marshalls latest line of compact guitar pedals takes things back to what Marshall knows best – delivering incredible guitar amp tones! Behringer tease some prototypes

The synth wizards at Behringer have always got some stuff cooking, from the much-anticipated to the cult-classics reimagined. NAMM 2025 is no different, with plenty of stuff on display that’s still in the works – what can you pick out from their yet-to-be-announced synth projects…? See below:

(above) Half a decade ago Behringer showed off repairing Tears For Fears original Yamaha DX-1. Synthusiasts know all too well the DX7, being crazy powerful for the time, but also requiring an entire degree to programme. The Original DX-1 was two DX7’s strapped together with extra bells and whistles; it was King of digital synths in the day. Behringer have brought life to their homage of the DX-1 the BX1 but they’ve also added an effects section + a CS-80 inspired analogue multimode filter of all things.

(above) Behringer brought out their JT-16 to their stall at NAMM 2025. Behringer have been long requested to give homage to the Roland Jupiter-8 which has become much of a holy grail for synthusiasts which have reached mortgage levels of cost, and that’s even if you can find a working one. The JT-16 looks set to bridge that gap and improved upon, the name “16” suggests that this will be a 16 voice analogue poly rather than the original 8 voices of the Jupiter-8.

(above) Next on the menu of Behringer mini synths looks to be the Casio CZ-101 but with an analogue filter and a built-in chorus.

Since Fender’s inception, they have always aimed to offer instruments to players of all levels and abilities even those at the very beginning of their musical journey. In 2025 Fender have rewritten the rule book the introduction of the Fender Standard Series. Aimed to bridge the gap between some of the higher-end Squier instruments and the Mexican-made Player II and Player II Modified series the Fender Standard range offers the genuine Fender name, quality and tone at a price point that’s more reminiscent of beginner guitars. Whether you are an absolute beginner looking for an instrument that will truly see you through, or perhaps someone who has started on a much lower-quality instrument and you’re looking for the next step up. Perhaps even you’re a working professional, after the highest quality affordable backup, the Fender Standard Series has every base covered!

Over the years Indonesia has developed a strong reputation for building high quality musical instruments with many of the leading brands opting to have some production based there. Factories are renowned for their careful craftsmanship as well as their meticulous tonewood selection and its often suggested that Indonesian made guitars are only a tier below the highly regarded Japanese instruments. Indonesian made instruments are regularly compared with guitars way above their price point. Fender have a long history with Indonesia, firstly with some of the production of their Squier ranges but also with a handful of Fender branded instruments including many of their Acoustic instruments, the jaw-dropping Special Edition FMT Custom Telecasters as well as the ever popular Tom DeLonge Starcaster!

The Fender Standard Series doesn’t aim to be super modern, neither vintage-accurate. They are comfortably in the middle offering a carefully curated assortment of features that are designed to suit the majority of different players and playing styles. They are built around a lightweight Poplar body which offers an instrument with rich harmonic overtones and a resonant sustain. Like 99% of Fender’s its neck is crafted from Maple and is available with a darker Indian Laurel fingerboard.

The neck is a very comfortable Modern-C shape with a luxurious feeling satin finish with gloss headstock for classic Fender looks. Its arguably Fender’s most popular neck profile and is designed to be comfortable up and down the fingerboard for both lead and rhythm playing. Its 9.5″ radius also adds to the premium feel of this instrument.

Under the hood the Fender Standard Series is powered by a set of genuine Fender Ceramic pickups. They have been specially designed to capture the heart and sole of Fenders signature tone while also offering a touch more power and compression to suit more contemporary genres. The Fender Standard Series also features genuine Fender hardware for pinpoint tuning accuracy and stability ensuring that no matter what you throw at it, its ready!

Fender Standard Series vs. Fender Player II and Player II Modified

Other than the fact that one is made in Mexico while the other in Indonesia, the main difference is in the body wood, optional Rosewood fingerboards and pickups.

The Player II range are built using Alder, Chambered Ash or Chambered Mahogany. 3 tonewoods which are unanimous with the Fender brand. The Fender Standard is crafted with Poplar which although isn’t traditionally used on Fender instruments, it is a tonewood which is frequently used with other big brands due to the fact that tonal its nearly identical to Alder (Fender’s most common body wood) and secondly, it weighs significantly less compared to standard cuts of Alder actually resulting in a better sounding instrument with nicer sustain!

The Fender Player II also comes with the option of a Rosewood fingerboard whereas the Standard Series offers Indian Laurel. Again Rosewood and Laurel are often regarded as being tonally similar however many do feel that the Rosewood fingerboard on the Player II offers a more warmer and rounder tone with a more premium playing experience.

The other big difference is the Player II comes equipped with Alnico pickups, again Fenders more traditional pickup choice. To some its a delicate subject but in reality both are just as good as each other, they just offer slightly different flavours of the same thing. Fender regularly use Ceramic magnet pickups on more modern models. They produce a slightly more compressed signal with a higher output which not only covers the classic Fender tones, it also nails more modern playing styles and gain structures.

Furthermore, The Fender Player II Modified lineup takes things even further in the the Player II series and offers players a range of affordable instruments that come feature packed with a selection of common mods found on many self modified workhorse Fender instruments. Boosting Fender Noiseless pickups, modern wiring and electronics, upgraded hardware including locking tuners as well as TUSQ nuts, the Player II Modified series is built for those really striving for a performance made instrument, straight out the box.

All in all, both the Fender Standard Series and Fender Player II are excellent choices for those after a high-quality Fender on a budget. The Fender Player II is a more expensive instrument built with more traditional Fender tonewoods and generally made with an increase in overall build quality. However the Fender Standard Series hold there own offering an excellent all-round option for those after the best guitar or bass for the least amount of cash.

Fender Standard Series vs. Squier

Squier are renowned for building some exceptional electric guitars and basses but how does the Fender Standard Series compare?

Like Fender, Squier offers both vintage and Contemporary variations each aimed at different types of players and playing styles. Also like Fender, Squier offers a number of different models each aimed at different playing levels and price brackets.

Comparing the Fender Standard Series to Squier guitars and basses is actually more difficult than it sounds. This is because there are two ways to approach a direct comparison. The first and perhaps most obvious is to compare the Fender Standard Series to Squier’s most top-tier instruments, the Classic Vibe series. However, this poses the issue that these two series are nearly complete opposites to each other. The Classic Vibe series are vintage reproductions of classic models meaning the hardware and pickups are very specific to what it replicating whereas the Fender is more of a modern iteration.

The second option would be to find the model in the Squier range whose specs closest match the Fender. Which in this case would be the Squier Affinity Series. Like the Fender Standard Series, the Squier Affinity Series features a Poplar body with a satin finish C-shape Maple neck along with an optional Laurel fingerboard, modern-styled hardware and ceramic pickups. However, this almost seems unfair as the Affinity instruments fall under the super affordable category while the Fender Standard is well over double the price.

Fender Standard Series vs. Squier Classic Vibe

As previously described, both are very different styles of instrument so comparing is difficult. The Squier features vintage-styled hardware and pickups with a vintage correct gloss finished neck. The Fender has more contemporary voiced pickups and hardware and has a satin-finished neck.

On the whole, both ranges feel and sound excellent and a lot of it would be down to personal preference on tone and feel however on the whole, the Fender Standard Series does feel like a more expensive instrument.

Fender Standard Series vs. Squier Affinity

As expected the Fender feels like a step above. Its hardware feels more fluid and stable, the pickups ring sweeter and on the whole the build quality feels like it’s over double the price, but this was to be expected. As previously stated, this is an unfair comparison and for the money, the Squier Affinity series is an exceptional entry-level instrument.

Conclusion

I’m sold on the Fender Standard Series and think it’s a great addition to the Fender lineup. A lot of people will ask why but after really diving deep I feel that the Fender Standard range very neatly fits into a gap that wasn’t filled and offers people a good alternative at a good price to what’s already available. I think they are an excellent choice for those who really want to invest in a quality instrument at the very start of their journey and as someone who works as a musician and regularly worries about things going wrong, I think the Fender Standard series is a perfect choice as a backup to my more expensive Fenders.
