Conclusion

The thing that excites me the most about a lot of this Bluetooth-enabled gear is the fact that it allows so much to be done in just one simple device.

To me, one of the biggest hindrances in a good practise routine is the faff of setting up, things going wrong and generally needing multiple things to allow me to get to a place where I’m even ready to begin practising. Not to mention the effort in then putting it all away again. The fact that I am now able to have a guitar amp tucked away on a shelf in the dining room, which the whole family can use during the day to stream music that I can simply plug into and play whenever I find 5 minutes, is beyond priceless.

Also, as someone who obsesses over gear and tones, being able to immerse myself in my amps app and explore different models and presets offers so much inspiration to my creativity.

By no means am I going to sell up my valve amps and pedalboards, but as a tool for effortless practising… I am very much on board!

One of the most frequently asked questions by new customers, as well as one that I experienced at least once a week when I used to work as a guitar teacher, was what guitar should I get, a classical or an acoustic?

In this blog, I take a look at the key differences and try to answer some of the questions you ask when first thinking about diving headfirst into the alluring world of guitar.

What is the difference between a classical guitar and a regular guitar?

When most people say “acoustic” or “regular” guitar, they are often referring to a steel-string acoustic guitar. This is the acoustic guitar you’ve heard on countless songs from many of the most well-known artists, from Bob Dylan to The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin, as well as modern artists such as Radiohead, Oasis, Coldplay, Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran.

Although sometimes grouped into two categories, they are actually just two types of acoustic guitars. The main difference between the two is that one uses steel (metal) strings while the other uses nylon (plastic) strings.

There are a number of other, mainly constructional differences which I will get into a little later, but on the whole, they are very similar. Both have 6 strings and are generally tuned to ‘standard’ tuning (EADGBE), both feature a scale length (string length between the saddle and nut) of around 25.5”, and both usually have between 18-20 frets, depending on the specific model.

In short, anything you can play on a steel-string guitar, you can also play on a classical guitar and vice versa.

So, what are the differences?

Really, the key differences are the sound and the feel. The nylon strings on a classical guitar produce a much mellower tone, whereas steel strings are often loud, bright and present. The nylon strings can also feel softer to play.

Other key differences include…

• The Nut Width: Classical guitars generally come with a much wider 52mm nut width. This is because the modern classical guitar was developed in Spain in the late 19^th century and was primarily designed to accommodate the playing styles and techniques required for the classical musical styles of the time. Modern steel-string acoustics typically feature a much narrower 43mm nut width, which is generally better suited for more contemporary playing styles such as chordal strumming and flat-picking.
• Lighter Construction: Nylon strings produce a much lower string tension compared to those found on a steel-string. Therefore, a classical guitar can typically be built with far less internal reinforcement. A steel-strung guitar will usually have an adjustable truss rod built into the neck, which is designed to help keep the neck straight under such high amounts of strain. Classical guitars generally don’t need this.
• Internal Bracing Pattern: One of the biggest differences between a classical and a steel-string acoustic guitar is the internal bracing pattern. This is a series of wooden braces which a) support the guitar’s top from the enormous pressures of the strings at pitch, and b) tunes the top to specifically resonate and move in a way that enriches and emphasises the vibrations of the strings. Due to both having such different tones, the bracing patterns are often significantly different.
• Bridge and Tuners: Owing to the differing designs of the strings, particularly how they connect to the guitar at each end, the bridge and tuners differ slightly. On a steel-string acoustic, the strings usually feature a ‘ball end’, which is fed into the guitar’s body and held in place by a bridge pin. Because of the lighter tension and increased flexibility of a nylon string, classical strings are simply tied into place at the bridge. Also, classical guitars typically feature a slotted headstock with side-mounted (horizontal) tuners.
• The sound: Throughout this blog, I have mentioned a few times how nylon-strung classical guitars sound vastly different to steel-strung acoustic guitars. As previously described, in the most simplest terms, classical guitars typically sound warm and mellow, whereas steel-strung guitars sound bright and percussive.

Digging a little deeper, trying not to get too technical, when you hear an individual note from a musical instrument, you actually hear multiple, which sort of mould together to form one note. These are separated into the ‘fundamental’ and the ‘overtones’.

The Fundamental is the main note (pitch) of the sound and is the base sound you hear. The overtones are a whole series of higher notes and frequencies that ring out in combination with the fundamental. It’s these overtones that help form the overall timbre of the instrument. Classical guitars are designed and built to specifically capture the sound of the fundamental note, causing the sound to be more focused and warmer due to the lack of higher overtones. Steel-string guitars are often built to allow the overtones to ring more freely, creating a much brighter, resonant tone.  

Is classical guitar easier than acoustic guitar?

Yes and no. As previously mentioned, nylon strings are softer and due to their reduced string tension, playing a classical guitar can feel slightly more forgiving on your hands and fingers. This is particularly useful when you first start playing, and you have not yet developed tough calluses on your fingertips. This makes classical guitars a great tool for getting the basics down.

With that said, if your intention is to use a nylon guitar for its initial purpose – i.e., classical or Spanish music, then classical guitar certainly is not any easier than a steel-string acoustic guitar. Many of the techniques and chord voicings required for these playing styles require years of practise and dedication to master. All types of guitar playing, whether it’s acoustic, classical, electric, jazz or anything else, have techniques which are suited for beginners and others for more advance player. It’s simply a case of finding the style you want to dedicate your time towards and putting in the time.

Do you have to learn on an acoustic before progressing to an electric guitar?

This was another question I got commonly asked when teaching guitar. The answer, put simply, is no! You do not need to start your guitar journey on an acoustic if your ambition is to play an electric guitar. Yes, as stated above, classical acoustic guitars can be a bit more forgiving for the fingers when compared to a steel-string acoustic or electric guitar; however, if you have no interest in the sound of a classical guitar, then ultimately I would recommend just jumping straight into electric. Learning any new skill is hard, and in reality, there will be a period of time where you might not sound as good as you hoped, and you may feel disheartened and contemplate giving up. Trust me, we’ve all been there! You don’t want to add to this by playing an instrument that you don’t actually like the sound of. If you want to play an electric, then get an electric!

Possibly one of the most spoken about topics among guitarists right now is how common it’s becoming to go to a live show and not see a single amp onstage. With guitar rigs getting smaller all the time and more players than ever choosing to go ‘direct’, it’s getting increasingly harder to ignore the benefits of effortless load-ins and near-silent stages, especially with so many pedals now sounding and feeling closer than ever before to the real thing. It’s no surprise that ‘ampless’ rigs have exploded in popularity over the last few years.

With more gear than ever available, it’s sometimes tricky to pin down exactly what is best for you, especially when looking at a group of pedals which all do a very similar thing but all in quite different ways. Not to mention, with the added complication of so much overlap of features as well as shared guitar tone ‘buzzwords’.

With some pedals designed to simply capture the character of a classic amp, while others made to fully simulate or model, and some built to act as a complete portable rig with speaker driving capabilities – it’s no longer a question of can a pedal replace a rig, but more which pedal could you choose to replace your rig.

How can Pedals replace my traditional Amp setup?

There is so much overlap between pedals designed to mimic or replace an amp, and to make matters even more confusing, it’s fairly common for one type of pedal to be described as another. From overdrives and distortions being described as Preamps to Amp Sims labelled as Amp in a Box pedals, getting your head around what’s what can quickly turn into a guitar pedal minefield.

To try and keep things simple, I have categorised the 5 main types of pedals that I think could easily replace any traditional amp set-up, based on my understanding of pedals and their topology.  These are:

• ‘Amp in a Box’ (AIAB) styled pedals
• Amp Simulators
• Preamp Pedals
• Digital Modellers
• Pedalboard Amps

In this blog, I will deep dive into what each type of pedal is, how they can be used and what application each one is best suited for.

Amp in a Box

What is an Amp in a Box pedal?

Originally rising to popularity in the late 90s/early 2000s, Amp in a Box Pedals allowed players to add a flavour of another amp to their existing rig without the additional expense or size of another amp. Usually taking place in the ‘dirt’ section of a pedalboard, these pedals often utilise clever analogue circuitry and heavy EQing to provide the tonal character of a legendary valve amp at the click of a button.

Who are Amp in a Box pedals for?

This style of pedal is the perfect solution for those who love the core sound and most importantly – feel, response and attack of their existing amp but perhaps want to add a different voice, e.g. a Marshall or Soldano, for a specific song or section or perhaps even as a lead tone.

It’s also a great option for those who perhaps are in situations where backline amps are often provided, and players want a pedal that can be used to make that amp sound more like their usual amp of choice.

Where do Amp in a Box pedals go in the signal chain?

Amp in a Box-style pedals typically go in the dirt section of a pedalboard with your other overdrives and distortions. There is no hard rule, but I usually like to place mine last in my gain pedals to sort of mimic other overdrives (Tube Screamers, Klons, etc) going into the AIAB pedal and pushing it harder. Just like if you were to put an overdrive pedal in front of a traditional valve amp.

Amp Simulator

What is an Amp Simulator pedal?

Amp Simulator pedals simulate the entire guitar amp from the preamp to the power amp, as well as the speakers or cab. They usually just focus on one specific amp or style of amp (although there are some exceptions), and to me, their key selling point is their amp-like simplicity. Often featuring enough outputs for use with PA systems, studio monitors or powered speakers and frequently including headphone and USB outs, Amp Simulator pedals are perhaps the simplest way to make your rig silent.

Many Amp Simulator pedals feature IR (Impulse Response), allowing the player to experience not only the typical sound of a direct guitar speaker like the sounds often heard on older cab sims, but also the cab as a whole, as well as the microphones used to record it and even the room itself. Together helping to create an experience not too dissimilar to what it’s like having your favourite amp mic’d up in the live room while you’re playing in the control room.

Who are Amp Simulator pedals for?

Amp Simulator pedals are the perfect option for players who have just one or two core amp sounds and simply want to make them silent – all while still maintaining the tone, character, feel and response of the original amp. Whether this is for a ‘silent’ stage setup, practising late in the night or even as a quick recording tool, an Amp Sim has it all covered.

Amp Simulator pedals are also the perfect ‘fly rig’ solution for situations where it’s not feasible to transport your regular setup. With a footprint often small enough to cram into the front pocket of a gig bag or backpack, they are an easy way to guarantee you get the tone you love, no matter the circumstances.

Where do Amp Simulator pedals go in the signal chain?

Typically, an Amp Simulator pedal takes the place of an amp – e.g., the last thing in a signal chain. From there, an Amp Sim pedal can then be plugged into a PA (or other powered speaker source) for a direct sound, headphones for practising or into a recording interface (via the pedal outs or even straight into a computer if the pedal you choose features a USB out).

Digital Modellers

What is a Modeller pedal?

Digital Modellers are the most feature-packed and advanced options for an ‘ampless’ electric guitar setup. Unlike everything else currently listed, Digital Modellers, for the most part, literally offer you pretty much every major amp type and more. They can replace an entire rig from conventional effect pedals, such as overdrives and modulations, to amps and cabs, and even utility pedals such as tuners and loopers. More advanced systems offer cutting-edge DSP processing as well as powerful amp profiling (or captures), together with IR for the most life-like digital simulations ever created.

Who are Modeller pedals for?

Digital Modeller pedals are for players who don’t want to be tied to one or two things. With Modelling pedals to suit just about every budget, they are the perfect way to really explore different tones and genres and experience different rigs and setups without needing to bust the bank every week. They are also the perfect choice for players after the most efficient all-in-one guitar tone solution for home, stage or even the studio.

Where do Modeller pedals go in the signal chain?

Modellers typically go last in the signal chain and are plugged directly into a PA (or other powered speaker source, such as studio monitors or a powered cab) or into a studio set-up (either via jack/XLR outputs or USB, depending on the Modeller you choose) or into headphones for silent practice.

Another way Modelling pedals can sometimes be used is directly into a traditional amp’s effect loop (via the return) or into a power amp device so that it can be used with a conventional guitar speaker cabinet.

Preamp Pedals

What is a Preamp pedal?

Preamp pedals are the pedal type that gets the most confusion, as a preamp can mean so many things, from a glorified EQ to a full-on distortion pedal. There’s also a lot of overlap with many Preamp pedals, also including features typically found on Amp Simulator pedals, such as recording outs and built-in IRs. In this context though, a Preamp pedal is a pedal which is designed to be used with a Power amp. Just like you’d find in a traditional amp. USUALLY, Preamp pedals are analogue, and for the most part, they literally take the preamp section from a classic amp and simply build it into a pedal, with some even including the valve gain stages!

Who are Preamp pedals for?

With many arguing that Preamp pedals often offer the most realistic tone, feel and response of all the pedal rig setups, Preamp pedals are the perfect choice for players who really like to home in on the small details.

Where do Preamp pedals go in the signal chain?

Preamp pedals are usually built to go last in the signal chain, directly into some form of Power amp, so that they can then be plugged into a guitar speaker cab. Although there are some which are built to also work as a sort of Amp in a Box-style pedal, they typically perform best going into a Power amp rather than directly into the input of a traditional amp. This is because Preamps are inherently designed to have a louder signal compared to a typical guitar effects pedal, meaning that when placed in-line with other effects or directly into an amp input, they can cause some unwanted side effects such as increased gain or noise.

If used with a traditional guitar amp with an effects loop, one of the most effective and commonly used methods of using a preamp pedal is with the 4-cable method. This utilises the Preamp pedal in the amp’s effect loop and allows you to effortlessly switch between your amp’s built-in preamp and the preamp pedal, allowing you to effectively add an additional channel to your amplifier.

Preamp vs. Power Amp

In the most simplest terms, a preamp shapes the guitar’s tone and also sets the guitar’s gain level; however, preamps generally are only as loud as line level (even less than 1W). It’s a Power Amp’s job to amplify this signal to an audible volume, as well as providing enough power to drive a speaker cabinet. There are tonnes of Power Amps for electric guitar on the market, but here are some of our favourite…

Pedalboard Amps

What is a Pedalboard Amp pedal?

A Pedalboard Amp pedal is quite literally a guitar amp that has been neatly shrink-rayed into a pedal-sized enclosure.  Just like a ‘normal’ amp, Pedalboard Amps usually come equipped with enough umph on tap to drive a speaker cabinet, enabling the player to experience the feel and resonance of a real speaker being driven, whether at home, on stage or in the studio. However, for even more versatility, Pedalboard Amps often also feature headphone and line-level outputs with onboard cab-simulation allowing players to effortlessly connect to a PA or Audio interface as well as silently practise.

Who are Pedalboard Amp pedals for?

Pedalboard Amps are the perfect solution for those who are set on 1 core sound and want the portability and connectivity of an Amp Simulator pedal, but also want a solution that can be used the ‘traditional’ way with a cab.

Where do Pedalboard Amps pedals go in the signal chain?

Pedalboard Amps are usually placed last in the signal chain, just like a traditional amp.

Conclusion

Whether you simply want to add a different flavour to your existing setup or perhaps want an entirely new rig built for silent stages, effortless recording and practising into the night, pedals are a perfect way to achieve this.

With so many options available at budgets to suit everyone, it’s the perfect way to experience and experiment with sounds you may not typically try. And remember, this blog is just a guide to help you figure out what you may want to try for yourself – many of the greatest guitar tones were found by breaking  ‘rules’ and experimenting with pedal placements.

Since first launching in 2019, the Fender Vintera series has been the go-to choice for vintage tone enthusiasts who are after a vintage-correct Fender electric guitar or bass at a price that doesn’t bust the bank!

With Vintera II already a firm favourite here at Andertons, we put it head-to-head with Vintera III to find out what the differences and improvements are and whether this latest generation is a worthy upgrade to the last.

What’s New With Vintera III? Key Specs Compared…

Before diving into the details, here’s a side-by-side look at how Fender’s Vintera II and Vintera III series measure up:

Like Vintera II, the Vintera III lineup offers Stratocaster, Telecaster, Jaguar, Jazzmaster and Mustang electric guitars as well as Precision and Jazz Basses in addition to a Bass VI model. Similarly, like the previous generation, Vintera III covers the complete span of Fender’s golden era, ranging from the 1950s all the way up to the ‘70s.

Key differences include a redeveloped and improved custom colour palette, expanding on Fender’s colourful back catalogue, as well as accurately ensuring that metallics shimmer and pastels glow, just as they did the day they left the factory.

Vintera III now focuses on specific eras instead of broader decades, meaning that the range has been expanded, with variations for Late ‘50s, Early ‘60s, Mid ‘60s, Late ‘60s and Early ‘70s, depending on model. Consequently, neck profiles, pickups and hardware have been reproduced accordingly to accurately portray each of these eras.

Other significant updates include Round Laminate Rosewood fingerboards on some models, as well as Pearloid fingerboard dots. Clay dots now feature on some Early and Mid ‘60s Rosewood fingerboard models, as well as the decal being applied over the headstock finish. The Synthetic nut found on Vintera II has also been upgraded to a genuine bone nut.

Are Fender Vintera III guitars better than Vintera II models?

Better is always subjective, but with their genuine bone nuts, a redeveloped and improved custom colour palette, and new era-specific electronics, hardware and details, it’s easy to see how the Vintera III series has truly taken things to the next level.

It homes in on the details, allowing players to experience a level of accuracy never before seen on a Fender instrument built outside the USA. Instead of taking the zoomed-out approach found in Vintera and Vintera II, where each model was more of a generalised overview of a vintage-inspired decade, Vintera III takes a more granular approach, zooming in on a specific era of Fender’s golden years. The key is always in the details, and for those who live and breathe this legendary period of electric guitar history, boiling things down to this level of finesse is truly the only way to really capture the authentic sound, vibe, mojo and aesthetic of the originals.

Fender Vintera III Stratocaster Guitars

 

 

The Vintage III Stratocasters are offered in 3 key eras – Late ‘50s, Early ‘60s and Late ‘60s.

• The Late ‘50s model features an Alder body with a Late ‘50s D-shaped Maple neck.
• The Early ‘60s model has an Alder Body with an Early ‘60s Maple neck, Round Laminate Rosewood fingerboard and clay marker dots.
• And the Late ‘60s Start comes equipped with an Alder body and is offered with either a Maple neck with a Round Laminate Maple fingerboard and black dots or a Round Laminate Rosewood fingerboard with Pearloid dots. Both necks feature a Late ‘60s C-shaped neck profile.

All models feature era-specific pickups and hardware.

Fender Vintera III Telecaster Guitars

 

 

The Vintera III Telecasters are offered in 2 era models – Late ‘50s and Mid ‘60s.

• The Vintera III Late ‘50s Tele features either an Alder body (for solid colours) or Ash (for transparent) in partnership with a Late ‘50s V-shaped Maple neck.

Fender Vintera III vs Fender Custom Shop

With a price tag around 3 times as much as Vintera III, the Fender Custom Shop is the absolute crème de la crème of all of Fender’s ranges. No stone is left unturned in crafting the most luxurious and premium Fenders to date! With options for both vintage, modern and everything in between, the Custom Shop has a model to suit every type of player and style. Crafted within a very small team using many of the same techniques and machines originally used in Fender’s Golden Era, a Custom Shop instrument is, without a doubt, the closest you can get to a real vintage instrument without paying the vintage price tag.

With production levels much closer to those in the ‘50s and ‘60s, the Custom Shop is able to replicate just about everything down to the nth degree on their vintage replicas, making it nearly impossible to tell the difference when played side by side with a real vintage model. They also go as far as ageing the finish on some of their instruments, making their guitars and basses not only feel and sound like the real deal but also look like a genuine 60-year-old workhorse.

If owning the real deal is the goal but the budget won’t stretch to the vintage price tag, the Fender Custom Shop is the guitar or bass for you.

 

 

Conclusion

As a vintage-guitar enthusiast, I think that the Vintera III series is a true step up from the previous Vintera II lineup. I love the level of detail now demonstrated in the range, and as someone who geeks out about the tonal differences between round laminate vs slab board Rosewood fingerboards, I can’t wait to properly spend some time with each model, discovering which one is best for me.

Small details like the era-specific fingerboard markers, the headstock decal over the finish, as well as the refined, more accurate finishes are a real icing on the cake feature and something that I think really stands out when compared to Vintera III’s predecessor.

With their included gig bag, bone nut and sensible price point, Vintera III is the perfect choice for intermediate to professional players looking for a stage or studio-ready workhorse who also wants to add some of that authentic ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s magic to their rig.

Valeton GP-150 Features

Built around Valeton’s 2nd Generation HD software, the GP-150 and GP-180 are built for players who demand an all-around modelling platform with hardware that’s equally comfortable on stage, in the studio or at home. The smorgasbord of versatile controls in partnership with their stunning 2.4” HD LCD colour screen ensures that using and editing on the GP-150 and 180 feels fluid and effortless. The GP-150 features 2 footswitches as well as a built-in expression pedal for enhanced creativity without the need to plug in additional controller pedals.

Valeton GP-180 Features

Moreover, the GP-150 and the GP-180 both feature all the same updates and innovations, with the GP-180 offering a few more control options as a bonus for the lack of a built-in expression pedal found on the 150. With an overall width of 18.1cm, the GP-180 is a hair more compact than its expression pedal-equipped counterpart. It’s also a touch lighter too, weighing only 843g. This perhaps makes it the overall better choice for bite-sized rigs. There is a welcome addition of 10 module shortcut buttons on the face of the pedal, as well as an additional footswitch. Unlike the GP-150, the 180 features a fully analogue bypass as well as the DSP bypass found on the 150. The GP-180 can also support footswitch MIDI commands.

Battery Powered

The built-in 3000mAh Li-ion battery in the GP-150 and 180 provides over 6 hours of runtime with the screen brightness set to level 2. Meaning that on a single charge, there is ample power for sound check, warm up and the show. It also means there is more than enough juice for practising on the go without the need for mains power. Alternatively, the GP-150 and GP-180 can be powered by a standard 9V DC pedal power supply or with a 5V USB-C cable.

GP-150 vs. GP-180 vs. GP-5

The GP-5 is the perfect introduction to the Valeton platform. It’s powered by the same effortless software (albeit an app is required to really unlock its full potential), has the same incredible sounds and is built to the same high standards as its pricier siblings. That said, it does have its limitations. Its smaller screen, single footswitch, minimal onboard controls, lack of looper and reduced features, effects and storage do limit its standalone functionality, especially when used as a live stage tool.

Although they do share so much in common, comparing the GP-5 to either the GP-150 or the GP-180 is largely unfair, as to me, they both serve very different purposes. The GP-5, as previously mentioned, is the perfect gateway into the Valeton ecosystem. It’s the cheapest pedal in the range and is a great way of getting hands-on with modelling for the first time. The GP-5 is also the perfect Plan B rig. With its pocket-sized footprint, it couldn’t be easier to pre-program a handful of your core tones and effects and keep it tucked away in a gig bag or pedalboard pocket, ready for if ever the worst ever did happen.

GP-150 vs. GP-180 vs. GP-50

The GP-50 shares a very similar feature set to the GP-5 in terms of power and storage; however, things have been taken up a level with increased controls, a second footswitch, a looper, and onboard editing capabilities. With its built-in looper, 1,450 mAh battery and integrated drum machine, the Valeton GP-50 has quickly earned a reputation as being the ultimate, affordable digital modelling home, and on-the-go and practise setup.

However, when put side by side against the GP-150 or the GP-180, you quickly see why these new models have the edge compared to the GP-50. With its larger screen size, increased controls, better sample rate and signal-to-noise ratio, increased effect chain modules, larger battery, improved I/O and bigger storage, it’s easy to see how the GP-150 and 180 lend themselves to more professional environments.

GP-150 vs. GP-180 vs. GP-200

The GP-200 is built for performance. It’s bigger, more powerful, has more features and is generally built with just about everything you could ever need for stage or studio. Comprising of 2 models, the GP-200 and GP-200LT (a slimmed-down, more portable version of the standard version), the GP-200 takes pride of place as Valeton’s flagship model.

While not as big, powerful or feature-packed as the GP-200, the GP-150 and 180 offer a good compromise between portability and performance. Especially thanks to the built-in 3000mAh rechargeable Li-ion battery that the 150/180 features.

I think it’s fair to say that every pedal in the Valeton GP series has truly earned its place in the GP lineup. I think that the GP-5, GP50, and GP-200 all cover specific jobs within the range, with the 5 and 50 largely covering home and practise and the 200 taking care of stage and studio.

The Valeton GP-150 and GP-180 perfectly offer a jack-of-all-trades workhorse effect processor, perfect for guitarists after one piece of kit that can do it all from home to stage and everywhere in between.

If you’re new to guitar or modelling and are just after an affordable workhorse to get you going, then either the GP-5 or GP50 would be an excellent choice. Again, perfectly fusing vintage with modern, the Ultra Luxe Vintage series features their acclaimed Pure Vintage pickups as well as stunning, vintage-accurate nitrocellulose lacquer finishes, sympathetically aged in their Heirloom relic styling. Unlike the American Pro Classic models, the Ultra Luxe Vintage comes equipped with modern hardware with locking tuners for pinpoint accuracy, and each model features Fender’s enhanced ‘Ultra’ contours and neck heel recess. The neck is also carved to a Modern D profile with a compound radius for even more ergonomic enrichment.

The vintage neck profiles can feel large and clunky, and the 7.25” fingerboard radius is prone to choking out with bigger bends. The Fender American Professional Classic series negates these issues by offering a classic-sounding and looking instrument with the addition of a performance-ready modern neck.

 

Conclusion

Taking place as Fender’s entry point into their prestigious American-made line-up, the Fender American Professional Classic ticks a lot of boxes. In my opinion, their combination of classic looks, authentic tone and modern playability in conjunction with their accessible (compared to other American-made instruments) price point truly makes this range stand out as a perfect vintage-inspired, versatile, high-performance workhorse.

Playing them, there is an overall feeling of reliability and stability, just like I find whenever I pick up an American-made Fender. I love how the neck feels, especially due to its satin finish and I really think that Fender has nailed it with the Coastline pickups. They sound like a real Fender should and manage to rise perfectly to every situation thrown at them, no matter how much tone alteration I throw at them with gain and effects.

Expanding on the previous 2-voice switch, the Duchess MK II range just got even more versatile thanks to the upgraded 3-way voice switch. With each selection offering more lower mids through to the treble control, shaping your tone to suit any guitar, pickup type, or genre has never been simpler.

MK Reverb (V40 Deluxe Head and Combo/V140 Super Duchess)

The Victory V40 Deluxe (head and combo as well as the V140 now features the same valve-driven medium-sized Accutronics spring reverb that’s found on the flagship MK Clean amplifier. With independent Reverb and Dwell controls, dialling in your perfect reverb couldn’t be easier, from long luscious ambience to classic spring drip and splash.

2 Digital Reverb Voices (Lunchbox and Compact Models)

Finding your perfect reverb couldn’t be easier thanks to the V40 Compact’s 2 digital reverb options. With one voice covering the classic spring tones found on the larger Duchess amps, and the other offering a more modern voice that spans everything from subtle ambience to full-on immersion. A vast improvement on the single-voiced digital reverb found on the previous versions.

Three-Way Mid Kick

The dual-voiced Mid Kick switch found in the MK I V40 and V140 models, as well as the Mid Boost switch from the compact heads, have all been replaced with the MK II to an expanded three-way mid kick switch. With options for increased lower mids, more gain on the upper mids, or completely flat, dialling in your perfect mid-boosted guitar tone is effortless, from screaming leads to tight, focused rhythm.

For over 10 years, the Duchess has been a flagship workhorse amp for those after a high-headroom pedal platform valve amp. In my opinion, the MK II improvements are very welcome additions to the family, pushing the range even closer to the features found on the hand-wired flagship MK-Clean amp. The expanded 3-way voice and mid kick switch takes the versatility of these amps to a whole new level and really lets you dial in a more ‘colourful’ core tone that truly helps you find ‘your sound’. Having an amp that can go from fully transparent and open to just about every shade of colour from American to British in a few clicks of a switch is, in my opinion, the biggest feature of the Duchess MK II. I’m also really glad to see that these great features have, this time, made their way fully to the more compact models, meaning that every Duchess MK II user can experience its unique versatility. The improved spring reverb circuit taken directly from MK-Clean is beyond beautiful. It’s Accutronics’ medium-sized tank is the perfect complement to the Duchess MK II, offering a valve-driven reverb that seamlessly integrates into any playing style.

What is the Heirloom Finish?

Capturing a similar vibe to the Custom Shop Closet Classic finish, the Heirloom finish showcases the natural, eye-catching ageing that happens to instruments finished in Nitrocellulose Lacquer. There are no major scratches or wear marks; however, there is a beautiful, subtle chequered patina that can be seen if admired close up. In essence, it’s like a real vintage guitar from the ‘50s or ‘60s that’s been carefully stored away under the bed or in a closet. Not only does the chequing display a bucket load of rock and roll mojo, but also due to the natural porous qualities of Nitro finishes, the guitar is able to ‘breathe’ more, therefore resulting in a more overall naturally resonant guitar.

The Ultra Luxe Vintage Stratocaster is offered in ‘50s, ‘60s or HSS ‘60s variations. The ‘50s Strat comes with either a beautifully grained, open-sounding Ash body elegantly finished in White Blonde or with an Alder body finished in a classic Sunburst. Both feature a Maple neck and Pure Vintage ’57 pickups for bell-like chime.

The ‘60s and ‘60s HSS versions feature Alder bodies with stunning dark Rosewood fingerboards. They are offered in a selection of classic ‘60s custom colours including Fiesta Red, Surf Green, Ice Blue Metallic and Sea Foam Green. Featuring era-correct neck profiles with 7.25” fingerboard radii, vintage styled fret wire and authentic hardware, these instruments are for those who live and breathe the organic electric guitar tones of the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s and for those who feel without any doubt that Leo got it right the first time! To some though, these golden-era workhorses are quite literally a horse and cart in an age of high-speed modern convenience. Vintage neck profiles and vintage frets are not known for their ergonomic feel, and 7.25” fingerboards are renowned for choking out with extreme modern bends. It can also be hard for vintage-styled hardware and tuners to keep up with the accuracy found in more modern variations. František Furch began his guitar-building journey in socialist Czechoslovakia in 1981. Fuelled by the desire, ambition and necessity for high-quality acoustic guitars during a time when trading around the globe was near impossible. His goal was to craft a guitar that could rival even the most sought-after and well-known guitars from around the world and produce an instrument that provided the same shimmering tones, rich resonance and easy playability heard on countless records of the time. Today, Furch Guitars is one of the most prominent and highly regarded guitar manufacturers in the world. Lovingly handcrafted in the Czech Republic, Furch Guitars are renowned for their premium tonewood selection, expert craftsmanship and revolutionary designs and innovations such as their CNR Neck Reinforcement System and foldable travel acoustic guitars.

Innovation – The Key to Success

Furch has always been keen to always keep one foot pointing towards the future, always asking how things can be moved forward and how things can be developed. They love the core looks and tone of many of the classic acoustic models and brands, however wanted to build instruments that pushed these classic designs to their absolute maximum potential.

Starting from the ground up, they put every element of the most classic acoustic guitar designs under the microscope and truly deep-dived into what every part did, how it affected tone and what it did to the structural stability. It’s easy to forget that although guitars built in the ‘golden era’ are regarded by many as the ultimate examples of acoustic instruments and building, they were built during a period where many things were done by complete chance and a handful of trial and error. By using modern technology in partnership with modern precision engineering, we can in fact build instruments that push the boundaries of acoustic guitar building.

CNR Neck Reinforcement System

Perhaps the largest challenge that luthiers and acoustic instrument manufacturers have been tackling since day one is striking the perfect balance between strength and flexibility. Creating an instrument that’s rigid enough to withstand stable tension across the strings yet flexible enough to allow for fluid vibration and resonance has always been the ultimate goal in the quest for good tone. The Furch CNR Neck Reinforcement System drops tradition and takes things back to the drawing board, utilising modern materials, engineering, and science. The fully adjustable truss rod is encased within a carbon fibre enclosure, which provides superior rigidity and allows for more accurate and controllable adjustments up and down the entire length of the neck. In addition, a unique support casting made from a specially formulated alloy is placed within the neck heel, providing superior neck-to-body support, which allows for far less internal body support, resulting in more resonance throughout the body.

Improving things even further, the updated Furch CNR System Active takes Furch’s innovative ideas to the next level! By increasing the length of the L-shaped neck support structure by 60mm, Furch has been able to increase the strength and stability of the neck by 45%. This even further improves the overall neck stability and tonal transfer between the strings, neck and body. An expansion element has been placed in the heart of the CNR system to automatically counteract any possible neck movement caused by humidity and ensure that the neck stays exactly how you have set it to be. Finally Furch have developed a simple screw mechanism to quickly adjust at the overall string height without the need to modify the saddle!

Unique Foldable Travel Guitar Design

Another Furch innovation is building an acoustic guitar that can truly go anywhere! The revolutionary Little Jane foldable travel guitar is built for those who require a guitar made for freedom. Like all Furch guitars, the Little Jane is crafted from only premium solid wood, resulting in a highly portable travel guitar that sounds and responds in the same way many traditionally built guitars do. It’s dynamic, full sounding and musical and best of all, it easily and quickly stores away into its backpack-sized case with just a click of a lever at the neck heel and simply pulling the headstock away from the neck.  Its carbon-reinforced truss rod system ensures maximum stability even when stored away without tension.

Booster Soundport

One of the biggest and most well-known developments from Furch is their Booster Soundport. Scientifically engineered to not only create a more immersive playing experience for you as a player but also to unleash the full potential of the resonance and overall tone of the acoustic guitar.

It all started when Furch started to explore the idea that the size of the sound hole may have an impact on the tone and resonance of the guitar. They discovered that there was indeed a direct correlation between hole size and tone, and that actually there was an optimum size dependent on the overall size of the instrument. It was due to the build up of air pressure within the body, and thus, the ability for the soundboard to be able to move (resonate) freely.

With many of their guitars taking inspiration from the classic models from the ‘golden era’ of guitar making, it was important to Furch that they found a way to introduce this idea without dramatically changing the overall appearance of the guitar. They found that the air pressure could be reduced with the introduction of six parallel linear openings on the side of the guitar’s body. This in turn acted like an additional sound hole for the player, creating a more realistic and fuller sound for the musician. Overall, the guitars featuring a Booster Soundport were clearer with more note definition and clarity, louder and overall much more resonant.

The Furch Range

In its simplest form, all Furch Guitars fall into 3 core ranges… Travel Guitars, Colour Series and their Vintage lineup. All guitars from their more affordable Travel Guitars all the way to the premium Colour Series are lovingly handcrafted in the Czech Republic and all are made using premium all-solid tonewoods. All models except for the foldable Little Jane models features their CNR neck reinforcement system.
