Modular synths have a certain reputation. They’re powerful, sure, and plenty flexible, but they can be more than just a little intimidating too! But what if there was a system that captured all the creativity and sound-shaping potential of modular without the eye-watering price tag or mind-numbing complexity? That’s where the Behringer System 55 comes in.

If you’ve ever looked at a spaghetti-like wall of cables and thought, “Nope, too complicated”, the Behringer System 55 might just change your mind. This is modular synthesis made accessible. A faithful recreation of a classic system, complete with Eurorack compatibility, wallet-friendly pricing, and plug-and-play simplicity. Could this be the foot in the door to modular synthesis you’ve been waiting for? Let’s take a deeper look.

Let’s switch on the time machine and go back to the sound of the 1970s. Introducing: Our Modular 55, 35 & 15 Series! We’ve got more than 20 modules for you – all authentic reproductions of the circuitry from the “Modular 55, 35 & 15" Series. And all brought to the Eurorack standard but still staying true to the era with some specific features.

That warm sound was loved by Artists from Tangerine Dream to Depeche Mode. And an earlier version used by Wendy Carlos on the famous album “Switched on Bach”. That brought the sound of synthesisers into mainstream music and became basically the founding father of all synths in pop music.

The original Moog System 55 was famous for its rich, warm tones – and astronomical price tag! However, while Behringer have pulled out all the stops in reproducing the sounds of the original, their version offers a far more accessible path to vintage modular synthesis. So, if you’re chasing raw analogue power, intricate textures, or classic synth sounds, the System 55 delivers in spades, and with surprising fidelity and flexibility.

What is the Behringer System 55 Based On?

As we touched on, the Behringer System 55 is inspired by the Moog System 55, a linchpin of 1970s modular synthesis. Frequently used by electro pioneers like Keith Emerson and Wendy Carlos, the original featured thick, evolving tones and an ergonomic, hands-on workflow.

Crucially, Behringer have painstakingly recreated the circuitry of these modules using authentic analogue designs. From the 921B Oscillators to the CP3A Mixer, these modules maintain the signal flow and all the sonic character of the original, but in a far more compact and affordable package.

If you’re brand new to the synth scene, you might have heard the terms modular and semi-modular thrown around, but what do they mean? Here’s a quick breakdown:

Semi-modular synths (like the Behringer Neutron or Moog Mother-32) are self-contained, pre-patched systems with a default signal path already in place. However, as they’re semi-modular, you can use patch cables to override this path and create new routings.

Modular systems (like the Behringer System 55) have no default signal flow – everything is created from scratch by physically patching cables between modules.

There’s no doubt that modular synths offer much more flexibility, but they do have a slightly steeper learning curve that new users might find a bit more intimidating. That’s where the System 55 shines: it’s modular, but it’s been pre-built and laid out in a clear, logical way. No starting from a pile of loose modules and a soldering iron; you can be up, running, and patching away right out of the box.

Why Choose Modular Synths Over Software?

But the simple truth is, modular isn’t just about sound – it’s about interaction. Turning knobs, patching cables, hearing immediate feedback. It’s all part of the wonderful tactile nature of modular synths, and it makes sound design feel more like sculpting than simply programming. You don’t just ‘click’ a setting, you physically shape it in real-time.

There’s no denying that modular software has come a long way in emulating the patching experience, with some incredible standout options like the u-he Bazille Virtual Modular Synth Plugin and Kilohearts Phase Plant SoftSynth. But analogue hardware does still hold several clear advantages:

Latency-free performance: Instantaneous response with no buffering or processing delays.

Hands-on control: Every knob, jack, and slider invites spontaneous creativity.

Sonic depth and unpredictability: Analogue circuits can behave just a little bit differently each time, adding natural variation and richness.

No screen fatigue: Modular hardware pulls you away from the mouse, letting you work with your ears and hands.

Musical inspiration: Ask any analogue gearhead, and they’ll tell you that the mere presence of physical gear can often spark new ideas, simply by being there to interact with. What’s more, the limitations of a fixed interface can dispel that decision fatigue and push you to focus your thoughts in more creative ways.

Aside from these clear benefits, there’s something unquantifiable about getting your hands on analogue gear, the satisfaction of building your own signal path from the ground up. No menus, no presets, just pure sound shaping. If you enjoy a more visceral, exploratory approach to your music-making, modular hardware is seriously hard to beat. And with Behringer’s often unbeatable pricing, the entry barrier to modular has never been lower.

Is Behringer System 55 Worth It?

Short answer: yes – if you want real analogue modular sound without breaking the bank.

The Behringer 55 System offers undeniable value for money. A true modular system with 38 analogue modules, ready to patch out of the box, and all for a fraction of the price of a Moog or Buchla setup.

Compare it to virtual modular software, and you benefit from physical interaction, zero latency, and authentic analogue tone. Unlike software synths or desktop modules, there’s just something deeply satisfying about having that much analogue hardware at your fingertips. And unlike semi-modular synths, you’re not locked into a fixed signal path either. The Behringer System 55 is compact enough to fit into most home studios, but with enough real estate to really explore those complex patches and signal chains.

It’s ideal for:

Newcomers wanting a taste of modular without DIY headaches

Vintage synth fans craving Moog-style sounds

Experimental musicians and sound designers

Behringer System 55 FAQs

What is the Behringer System 55 based on?

It’s based on the classic Moog System 55 from the 1970s, one of the most iconic modular synths ever produced.

Is the Behringer System 55 worth it?

We think so! It’s one of the most affordable ways to enter the world of modular synthesis, with over 35 analogue modules included at an unbeatable price.

How big is the Behringer System 55?

It’s housed in a 3-tier Eurorack cabinet, measuring approximately 664 x 420 x 165 mm and weighing in at around 12.3 kg.

What is the output of the Behringer System 55?

The System 55 operates with standard Eurorack-level audio and control voltage (CV) signals. Outputs are available from various modules:

Audio outputs from the VCOs, VCF, and Mixers

CV outputs from sequencers, envelopes, and LFOs

Gate/trig signals from modules like the 960 Sequencer or 911 EG

While it doesn’t have a master output like a traditional synth, you can route final audio through the CP3A-M mixer into your audio interface or amp.

What’s included in the Behringer System 55 Complete?

38 classic-style analogue modules, a Eurorack case, and PSU. Just grab some patch cables and you’re ready to play.

What’s the difference between modular and semi-modular?

Modular synths have no fixed routing – you patch everything yourself. Semi-modular synths are typically self-contained and have a pre-set signal path, but you can override that with patching.

Can I expand the Behringer System 55?

Yes! It’s fully Eurorack compatible, so you can add more Behringer modules or other third-party Eurorack gear.

Is the Behringer System 55 good for beginners?

It certainly is. It’s designed to be a user-friendly entry into modular synthesis while still offering some serious sonic depth.

Behringer System 55: Final Thoughts

The Behringer System 55 punches well above its price. It’s a modular synth that gives musicians and producers access to that classic modular workflow with genuine analogue circuitry, all in a format that’s approachable, compact, and creatively inspiring.

Just as importantly, the System 55 is a system you can grow into. Its modular nature means that no matter whether you’re experimenting with your first patch or building intricate signal chains, it can develop with you. And with Behringer’s growing catalogue of Eurorack modules, there’s always something new to explore!

When it comes to developing your drumming skills, both acoustic and electronic drum kits offer distinct advantages and drawbacks. The choice often depends on your goals, environment, and long-term aspirations. Here’s how they stack up specifically for practice.

Electronic Drums for Practice

Pros:

Silent Practice:
The biggest advantage of electronic drums is the ability to practice quietly using headphones—ideal for apartments, shared homes, or late-night sessions.

Built-In Tools:
Most kits come with helpful practice features like metronomes, play-along tracks, loop functions, and recording options. These tools help refine timing, accuracy, and creativity.

Sound Variety:
With a wide range of sounds and kit emulations, you can experiment with different genres and styles, which is great for building versatility.

Easy Setup and Portability:
Compact and lightweight, electronic kits are easier to set up and move, making them practical for home practice or mobile teaching.

Cons:

Feel and Response:
Rubber or mesh pads don’t replicate the physical feedback of acoustic drums. The rebound, dynamics, and stick response are noticeably different, which can hinder adaptation to acoustic kits.

Sound Limitations for Live Transition:
While excellent for practising rhythms and coordination, the electronic kit may not prepare you fully for the volume, tone, and physical intensity of playing acoustic drums in a live setting.

Long-Term Development:
As you progress, you may find that electronic kits don’t challenge you to develop the finesse and dynamic control that an acoustic kit demands.

Acoustic Drums for Practice

Pros:

Realistic Feel:
Practising on an acoustic kit builds muscle memory and stick control that directly translates to live performance. The response and dynamics of real drumheads and cymbals foster better technique.

Live-Performance Ready:
If your goal is to perform live, acoustic practice conditions you for the power, sound, and presence needed on stage.

Authentic Sound:
You develop an ear for acoustic tone, tuning, and resonance, which is crucial for playing in bands or recording with microphones.

Cons:

Volume Issues:
Acoustic kits are loud. Practising at home can be a challenge unless you have a soundproof space or very understanding neighbours.

Space and Portability:
They take up more room and are heavier, making them less convenient for casual or mobile practice setups.

Fewer Built-in Tools:
Unlike electronic kits, acoustics don’t come with practice aids. You’ll need external gear (metronomes, recorders, etc.) to track your progress.

Recording Complexity:
Practising with recording or feedback in mind is more difficult—you’ll need mics, an interface, and possibly a treated room.

Hybrid Practice Approaches

Some drummers opt for a hybrid setup—acoustic shells fitted with mesh heads and triggers connected to a sound module. This provides the feel of acoustic drums with the noise control and digital tools of electronic kits.

Final Thoughts

If your main priority is quiet, flexible, and tech-supported practice, electronic drums are a smart choice—especially for beginners and hobbyists. They make it easy to focus on fundamentals like timing, coordination, and genre exploration.

However, if you’re aiming for live performance, nuanced technique, or professional-level playing, there’s no substitute for regular practice on an acoustic kit. The feel, dynamics, and physical demands of acoustics are crucial to mastering the instrument fully.

Best Practice Strategy: Combine both. Use electronic kits for convenience and drills, and acoustic kits to develop real-world chops and stage readiness.

The Japanese company didn’t just dabble in the future; they basically built it, gift-wrapped it, and accidentally left it in the hands of DJs, producers, and bedroom tinkerers who promptly redefined entire genres. The so-called “Number Series”, the 909s, 808s, 606s, 707s, the bassline-wiggling 303, and the occasionally overlooked SH-101, aren’t just gear. They’re cultural artefacts. Without them, a house might still be a roof over your head, techno would probably just mean “a particularly chatty washing machine”, and acid, well, you’re either trying to dissolve something or about to take a very interesting “trip”.

Now, Roland didn’t release these in sequential order as you might expect, so we have included the dates, but they’re going to go in order of their name and starting with the, drum roll.

Roland’s numbering system has thrown up some heavy hitters, but the TR-1000 might just be the boldest of the lot. Dropping in 2025, it’s the first time in 40 years that Roland has gone back to a true analogue drum engine roots, and it’s every bit as huge as you’d hope. The kicks land like gut punches, the snares cut with surgical snap, and the whole thing breathes with that unmistakable analogue warmth that made its ancestors immortal. Only this time, there’s digital muscle under the hood too, ready to twist, bend, and mangle beats into shapes we’ve never heard before.

The sequencer is a joy in itself, with mechanical keys that make programming feel tactile and alive, more like playing an instrument than operating a machine. Throw in modern performance tricks like probability, motion recording, and a Morph slider for instant chaos, and suddenly you’re not just sequencing patterns, you’re performing rhythms. It’s the kind of box that makes you want to lose an evening just pushing steps, twisting knobs, and grinning at the results.

Is it a throwback? Not really. The TR-1000 has analogue heart, sure, but it’s brimming with modern power: stereo sampling, FM and VA engines, circuit-bent oddities, and enough onboard memory to stash a universe of sounds. It’s part homage, part future shock. If the 808 and 909 laid the foundations, the TR-1000 is the skyscraper that sits on top of them.

TR-1000 Key Features:

Analogue 909 and 808 Circuits: First true analogue TR engine in 40 years, with recreated 808 & 909 circuits within a single unit!

Digital Engines: ACB modelling, FM, VA & PCM and Sampling capabilities including circuit bent versions of their vintage units.

Mechanical Keys + Expanded Control: Controls that are a delight to use, wonderful feeling keys and mappable controls to suit your performance.

Built like a tank: Rugged metal chassis built for studio grind & live mischief

Roland TR-909 – 1983

When the TR-909 first stumbled into the world in 1983, people weren’t quite sure what to do with it. Was it a successor to the 808? A strange hybrid of analogue circuitry and crunchy 6-bit samples? A glorified metronome with a bad attitude? As it turned out, the answer was: all of the above. Its kick drum was fat enough to rearrange your ribcage, its snare hit with just the right amount of grit, and its hats snapped like a breadstick at a wine tasting. Here’s the kicker: those hi-hats and cymbals were sampled rather than analogue; Artushi Hoshiai had no idea they’d go on to become the defining tick-tock heartbeat of dance music worldwide. What started as “we can’t synthesize the right sound” ended up being one of the most enduring sonic signatures in electronic music history, and from a collection of mismatched Zildjian and Paiste cymbals no less. Add in its sequencer with individual accents on each step and a shuffle of pure groove, and suddenly you have rhythm patterns with human feel, or at least the robotic approximation of human feel. It became the bedrock of house and techno, stomping its way from Chicago warehouses to Berlin bunkers. These days, you’ll struggle to find a club record without a 909 skeleton lurking in the background.

Roland TR-808 – 1980

If you had to pick one machine that changed music forever, you’d be hard-pressed to look past the TR-808. Released in 1980, it was Roland’s first fully programmable rhythm composer, and it landed with all the grace of a concrete pigeon. At first, nobody wanted it; the sound was considered too artificial compared to “real” drum kits and people wanted more realistic sounds such as the LinnDrum. But here’s the trivia kicker: the only reason the 808 sounds the way it does is because Roland had bought a massive stockpile of faulty semiconductors, and rather than chucking them out, they used them in the machine. Those defective transistors gave the 808 its famously deep, booming kick. Happy accident, or industrial-scale recycling genius? You decide. The result was a bass drum that could level city blocks, snares with the bite of an annoyed terrier, and handclaps that became the punctuation mark of countless hits. From electro and early hip hop to trap, pop, and even rock, the 808 carved out a permanent niche. It wasn’t designed to be timeless; it was designed to be useful, but by some cosmic fluke, it ended up being both. Today the 808’s kick is famously sampled and then tuned so that it also becomes the bass line.

Roland TR-707 & TR-727 – 1984 / 1985

The TR-707 and its colourful sibling, the TR-727, both debuted in 1985, right as Roland was leaning hard into PCM sampling. The 707 gave you clean, digital recordings of drum sounds that were crisp enough to pass in pop productions, while the 727 added a Latin percussion palette that turned every living room into a salsa club. Fun trivia here: the inclusion of MIDI as standard made it a dream for syncing with early Digital Synths and Workstations & Arrangers. Producers loved its big LED display and hands-on faders, which felt downright futuristic at the time. The 727, meanwhile, was often dismissed as a novelty, but those congas, timbales, and agogo bells carved out their own place in house, electro, and even industrial tracks. Together, these two machines embodied the mid-80s transition from analogue charm to digital precision. And while they don’t carry the same mythical aura as the 808 or 909, they deserve credit as the unsung workhorses of countless studio racks.

Roland TR-606 – 1981

Released in 1981 as the companion to the TB-303, the TR-606 was pitched as a drummer’s best mate, a portable box to keep rhythm alongside a guitarist or bassist. Spoiler: drummers were not impressed. But electronic producers quickly saw its potential. Its kick and snare had a bright, snappy edge, and its toms had a peculiar “plinky” tone that wormed its way into early electro and new wave. Trivia time: Roland deliberately designed the 606 to fit neatly into the same carrying case as the TB-303, so musicians could march around with a ready-made “band in a briefcase.” While it lacked the thunder of the 808 or the punch of the 909, the 606’s lightweight design and straightforward programming made it a hit with DIY producers and early bedroom studios. These days, it’s prized for its distinctive voice and portability, especially by those who appreciate the raw character of machines that were never supposed to be iconic in the first place.

Roland TR-505 – 1986

Released in 1986, it was like the younger sibling who turned up late to the party with a bag of crisps. Compared to the 707 or 727, it was more affordable, more compact, and honestly, a bit polite-sounding. But here’s the fun fact: that affordability meant it became a staple in classrooms, hobbyist studios, and with musicians who just wanted something simple to get the job done. Its PCM samples weren’t glamorous, but they were clean, and it was one of the first accessible ways to get proper digital drums without pawning off your grandmother’s jewellery. Many producers cut their teeth programming beats on the 505, which means its cultural importance lies less in nightclubs and more in sparking a million bedroom experiments that eventually spilt onto vinyl. In short, it may not be the star of the Roland line-up, but it was the training wheels that helped countless producers ride.

Roland TB-303 – 1981

Now we’re talking. The TB-303 was released in 1981 as a “Bass Line” machine, intended to accompany guitarists with realistic bass parts. Spoiler alert: nobody thought it sounded remotely like a bass guitar, and no one could reliably programme the thing. In fact, sales were so bad that Roland discontinued it after just a couple of years. But here’s where fate intervened: a handful of enterprising producers in Chicago realised that if you twisted the filter, resonance, and accent knobs in just the right (or wrong) way, the 303 didn’t sound like a bass at all. It sounded like the inside of a robot’s stomach after a vindaloo. That squelchy, resonant tone became the foundation of acid house, birthing an entire genre from a machine that was originally marketed as “practice gear.”, combined with Guitar Effects Pedals, specially distortion. You entre an entire sonic reality. The 303 is proof that sometimes failure is just success wearing funny trousers and a sequencer that gave birth to many a “happy accident”. To this day, the TB-303 is one of the most cloned and mimicked pieces of musical equipment, a prime example would be the Korg Prophecy, containing the patch “303Growler”, which was responsible for the main riff on Smack My Bitch Up by The Prodigy.

TB-303 Key Features

Resonant Filter:
The magic sauce that makes it scream, ideal for Analogue Synths lovers and acid heads alike.

Accent & Slide:
Unique programming quirks that gave it the characteristic squelch when used with Sequencers.

Compact Companion Design:

Last but by no means least, the SH-101. Released in 1982, it was a single-oscillator monophonic synth that was marketed to guitarists as an easy way to dip into synthesis. It even came with a keytar-style grip handle so you could prance around the stage pretending you were auditioning for a synth-pop Top of the Pops slot. The SH-101 had a wonderfully fat sound thanks to its sub-oscillator, the filter has become legendary for it’s distinctive squelch and growl and the sequencer + its front panels were so simple, there was little excuse for people to use it, it was almost impossible to get a bad sound out of it. This is why so many artists started with, and possibly still use one. Kaiser Chiefs + The Prodigy are two notable examples where the little starter synth is still used to this day.

SH-101 Key Features

Single Oscillator with Sub:
Small package, huge sound; a classic for Analogue Synths.

Modern Drum Machines: The Legacy Marches On

While the classic Roland Number Series has been safely enshrined in the halls of music history (and in some cases behind reinforced glass cases at auction houses), their spirit is far from gone. The same ethos of hands-on rhythm sculpting lives on in today’s machines. Roland themselves revisited their heritage with the Drum Machines in the Roland AIRA range, think TR-8S, which blends faithful recreations of the 808 and 909 with modern sample layering, digital polish, and USB connectivity. Companies like Elektron have also carried the torch, with machines such as the Analog Rytm combining the warmth of Analog Synths with the flexibility of Samplers. Korg, too, has never been shy about stepping into the beat-making arena, offering compact boxes that slide neatly into a live rig alongside DJ Equipment, Live Mixers, or even sprawling setups of Modular & Eurorack Synths.

The lesson here is that while you may not be able to snag an original 808 without selling both kidneys and your neighbour’s, the workflow and joy of programming grooves are still alive and well. Today’s hardware often gives you the same immediacy as the classics, but with modern conveniences like MIDI over USB, effects, and storage that doesn’t rely on batteries remembering what you programmed last week. The legends may be vintage, but the groove-making philosophy is still a thriving, pulse-quickening reality.

Conclusion

Roland’s Number Series weren’t just instruments; they were lightning in plastic boxes. Each one, from the mighty TR-808 to the squelchy TB-303, helped redefine genres, invent new ones, and gave rise to entire scenes that still thrive today. Their legacy is everywhere: in clubs, festivals, pop charts, and bedrooms. But here’s the good news: while original units now cost more than a family holiday, there are plenty of modern alternatives. Between Roland’s own recreations, software plug-ins, and a booming market of clones and homages, you don’t need to sell a kidney to get those sounds. Whether you’re building a collection of Analogue Synths, experimenting with Semi Modular & Desktop gear, or filling racks with Workstations & Arrangers, the influence of Roland’s Number Series is unavoidable. And honestly? We wouldn’t have it any other way.

Take Time To Tune

Tuning drums by ear can be a tedious and time-consuming task, especially for the inexperienced. Yet spending quality time with your drums will not only pay off short term in a great sounding kit, but you will also hone the skills to make tuning in future faster, more efficient, and more accurate. To get you started, there are many videos on YouTube with expert explanations on the subject.

Dampening

Any nasty overtones that tuning couldn’t deal with – particularly problematic with cheaper drums – can easily be dealt with through a bit of smart dampening. There are loads of different options from Moon gel to E-rings! There are also lots of DIY ways to muffle your drums that we’ll get to shortly!

Snare Wires

Easily overlooked, but good snare wires can turn your snare sound around. More wires means more sensitivity, and different metal compositions can make the sound snappier and crisper, or softer and more sensitive. Plus, good wires can help to reduce snare buzz, will be kinder to the snare’s incredibly thin resonant head, and will be much more durable.

DIY tips and tricks

Unfortunately, lots of the stuff we’ve suggested costs money, but now we’ve got some workarounds that you can do using things you’ll have lying around.
When it comes to muffling, there are loads of ways to dampen drums with what you already have, such as using a bulldog clip and a cloth to clip the cloth onto the edge of the drum hoop and have it rest on the head to take some of the ring away! Alternatively, you could use a bit of duct tape to tidy up the drums’ sound, just make sure to fold a little tab into it before you stick it on so you can get it off nice and easy should you want to!
Another option would be to use only drumheads you might have and cut them up to make your own dampening rings, much like the Evans E-rings!
If your kick drum is too resonant and won’t stop ringing, put something in there to dampen the sound! You can use anything from an old jumper, stuffed toys or even a pillow!

Cymbals

A great sounding set of cymbals can be the make or break of a drum kit, but they needn’t break the bank. Take Stagg’s range of dual-hammered cymbals, for example. They sound great and can hold their own against the big competition from Zildjian, Sabian, and Paiste, yet and a fraction of the price. It’s worth remembering that it’s much more difficult to quick-fix a cymbal to sound any better than the day it was bought, but subpar cymbals can come in handy for creating stackers or otherwise experimenting with sounds.

Conclusion

Once you’ve got your kit sounding better than ever keep it that way. Regular TLC, whether it be tuning, cleaning, oiling hardware or changing heads before they’re completely ruined will go a long, long way. I’ve done too many gigs where I’ve been greeted by a house drum kit identical to my own, yet one that is borderline unplayable due to neglect and mistreatment. It’s sad because I know how good the kit can sound; it’s annoying because I still have to cart along my own drums; and it’s a shame that the drums will become useless long before their time. Don’t let your kit see the same fate.

Drummers use various dampening techniques and drum accessories to get a tighter, more focused, or less “ringy” sound from their acoustic drums. It’s all about shaping the tone to suit different styles of music or personal preferences.

Why dampen your snare?

Reduce Overtones

Snare drums can produce high-pitched, ringy overtones that can be harsh or clash with other instruments. Dampening helps smooth those out.

Clean Up the Sound

In studio settings or live performances, engineers and drummers often want a tight, clean snare sound that cuts through the mix without excess ring or wash. Especially in pop, rock, hip-hop, and funk, a dry “crack” is preferred over a long resonant “bwoooonnng.”

Control Sustain

If your snare sustains too long, it can muddy up fast grooves or ghost notes. Dampening shortens the note so it’s punchier and more precise.

Match a Style or Vibe

Each genre has a different “snare aesthetic”:

Funk/Hip-Hop: dry, fat, and short

Rock: controlled but still punchy

Jazz: maybe a little more open and ringy

R&B/Neo-soul: very dampened, low, and thick

How can we dampen a snare?

Moongel:

Moongel is a super popular drum dampening product that you’ll find in most players’ arsenal. We use it to control overtones and reduce excessive resonance on drums and even sometimes cymbals. It’s made of a soft, sticky, gel-like material that adheres easily to drumheads or cymbals. Placing it closer to the centre gives more dampening, while placing it near the rim allows for a more open sound with just a bit of control. You can also use multiple pieces for heavier muffling.

O-rings:

O-Rings are plastic rings, usually made of a thin mylar material, that sit on top of a drumhead to reduce overtones and focus the drum’s sound. They’re shaped like a donut – hence “O-ring” – and come in different sizes for snare drums and toms. Some drummers even use both O-rings & Moongel together for max control! Some popular brands are, Evans and Remo.

Big Fat Snare Drum:

Big Fat Snare Drum is a line of drumhead overlay products designed to instantly change the sound of your snare (or toms) to give it a deeper, fatter, more vintage tone – like those thuddy, ’70s-style snare sounds you hear on classic records! It sits directly on top of your existing snare drum head, and some versions have weighted edges, foam strips, or even jingles to add specific sonic flavours. It drops the pitch, reduces overtones, and makes the drum sound darker, shorter, and more controlled. BFSD is kinda like the “big guns” of dampening – it doesn’t just control your snare sound, it transforms it!

Internal snare dampener:

An internal snare dampener is a mechanical device mounted inside the snare drum shell. It presses a piece of felt, rubber, or foam against the underside of the drumhead to reduce overtones and ring. An internal snare dampener is controlled by a knob on the outside of the drum (no harm intended). You can adjust the amount of pressure the dampener applies to the drumhead – so it’s like a built-in tone control!

Pro’s & Cons?

Moongel:

Pros:

Reusable and repositionable: You can move it around to different spots on the drum to change the amount of dampening.

Non-damaging: It won’t damage drumheads or leave residue.

Versatile: Can be used on snare drums, toms, and even cymbals.

Cons:

It gets fluffy!

O-rings:

Pros:

Instant dampening

No adhesives

Consistent effect every time

Great for live use

Cons:

Less customizable than Moongel (it’s all-or-nothing unless you cut them)

Big Fat Snare Drum:

Pros:

Instant “fat snare” sound without tuning

Removable and reusable

Doesn’t permanently alter your drum

Great for both live and studio use

Cons:

Can reduce sensitivity (especially for ghost notes)

Internal snare dampener:

Pros:

Built-in, no gear to carry around

Adjustable from subtle to heavy dampening

Super clean look—nothing visible on top of the drum

Awesome vintage tone and aesthetic

Cons:

Limited to what’s built in (you can’t move it around like Moongel)

Some models can rattle or wear out over time

Not always easy to install if your drum doesn’t come with one

Wallet

Classic trick: throw your wallet on the snare. Heavy enough to lower pitch & kill ring.

Tape

Use gaffer’s or duct tape to reduce ring. Customizable & low-profile.

Old Drumhead

Cut up an old drumhead with scissors = custom dampening ring.

Cotton Balls

Throw them inside your drum and let them fly around (you can tape them to the underside of your batter head if you like)!

Tissues + Tape

Tissue folded up and taped down = super soft dampening with a feather touch.

Tea Towls

Lay a tea towel over the snare head – can be full or partial coverage for vibe-y, thuddy tones.

Different varieties offer different sounds, responses and aesthetics depending on your style. These varieties differ in terms of shape, size, skin, hardware, tuning – the list goes on. But arguably, the most important aspect to consider is the material.

The bottom line is this: wood or metal? In this article, we’ll dig deep into the primary differences between the two. We’ll start off by looking at the different types of wood!

Most Popular Snare Drum Woods

Birch – birch offers a punchy sound with lots of attack. They tend to have a brighter, more focused sound with a slightly shorter sustain.

Maple – slightly more well-rounded than Birch, but still with a healthy bass response. They have a slightly warmer tone that’s slightly more resonant.

Beech – this hardwood offers a balanced tone not dissimilar from Maple, but with a slight mid-boost and accentuated low-end. Great for a super-fat snare sound.

Mahogany – known for a rich warmth and resonance in the bass and low-mid frequencies. Mahogany used to be a gold standard for shells, so it is associated with a vintage sound.

Poplar – a softer wood with a well-balanced tone. It has a focus on low-end, but not quite as much as mahogany. It has a good balance of attack and sustain, making the poplar snare quite versatile.

Bubinga – a super dense wood, bubinga shells typically have a deep, dark tone with a rich, fat low-end sound. They tend to have loads of attack, so they’re great for drummers who need to cut through the mix a bit more.

Walnut – walnut drums tend to have a quite dry sound with little resonance. They’re fairly dark and mellow-sounding but with a great ‘crack’ when you lay into the drum.

Most Popular Snare Drum Metals

Brass – as the earliest metal snare material, brass is the most familiar. Accentuated top-end but not without some bass/low-mid warmth.

Aluminium – a sharp, dry sound with a sparkling treble response. Great for cutting through pretty much any mix, but not for the faint-hearted.

Steel – boosted mids and even more treble than aluminium, Steel also offers improved sustain and presence. Generally, it’s pretty affordable too.

Copper – a darker, more rounded sound with less emphasis on top-end and a warmer response in the bass and mids. Often found in orchestral ensembles.

Bronze – often used for cymbals but far less common for shells. Tend to offer a warmer and darker tone with a lot of resonance. Capable of a wide range of tunings and have a massively powerful sound.

In summary

It depends on what you’re after – once you know that, you’ll be able to narrow down your choice. What isn’t immediately obvious is that wood and metal snares aren’t as drastically different as they once were. In a nutshell:

Sound – yes, metal snares generally sound brighter, whereas wooden ones sound more resonant. However, you can now get a metal snare that offers a fair bit of warmth and sustain; similarly, opt for a Birch wooden snare for an immediate, pronounced attack. Consider the sound you’re after and consult the choices above to hone in on the material that’s right for you!

Price – Some materials can be a bit pricier sometimes, like bell brass or bronze, but overall it’s a pretty even playing field, so focus more on the sound than the price tag!

Looks – I mean, there’s no right or wrong answer here. Personally, if I were shopping based purely on looks, I’d go for a nice Maple grain. Fancy something blingy? Try Steel or Brass. Fancy an eye-popping finish? Any material will do, perhaps a wood with a less-pronounced grain.

Practicality – we may be stating the obvious, but metal snares can be a tad heavier. Consider where your snare will be: at home? In the studio? On a plane every week? If you’re travelling frequently, consider your shell’s weight!

Unlike single-purpose instruments, workstations blur the line between keyboard and computer, combining multiple functions into one comprehensive unit. You essentially get a synthesiser, sampler, sequencer, audio interface, effects processor and multi-track recorder all built into a single keyboard.

The term “master” refers to the instrument’s ability to control and coordinate multiple sound sources, both internal and external. This means you can layer sounds, split the keyboard into different zones, and even control other MIDI devices from one central command station. It’s this versatility that makes workstations so effective in a range of performance settings.

Fundamentally, a workstation isn’t just for playing like a traditional instrument, it’s a tool for composing, creating sounds and programming full musical projects all within the unit.

How Workstations Differ from Other Keyboards

Digital Stage Pianos:
These are designed primarily for realistic piano sounds and basic electric piano tones. They’re fantastic for what they do, but they’re focused instruments. You won’t find big sound libraries or many capabilities aside from playing as a standard piano.

MIDI Controllers;
These are essentially just buttons in an instrument-like format that trigger sounds from external sources like computers or sound modules. They don’t produce any sounds themselves, making them dependent on other equipment. They can be great tools for studio or stage use, but most of the work to produce or modify your sound will be done by digital software or other external gear.

Synthesisers:
These are purpose-built for creating and manipulating electronic sounds, whether analogue or digital. They’re powerful for sound design but differ from workstations in their level of wider capability. They generally lack things like comprehensive sound libraries, multi-track capabilities and many of the sequencing or programmable features of workstations.

Master Keyboard Workstations:
These bring together the best of all these worlds. They offer realistic acoustic instrument sounds, powerful synthesis engines, extensive preset libraries, built-in sequencing, and the ability to control external gear.

Why Workstations Excel in Professional Settings

Stage Performances and Live Bands:
In live performance settings, workstations shine because they reduce the amount of gear you need to carry. Instead of hauling multiple keyboards, sound modules, and controllers, you can get most of the functionality you might need in one instrument. The ability to create complex splits and layers means you can play bass lines with your left hand, for example, while triggering strings and lead sounds with your right, all within the one keyboard. Plus, modern workstations are equipped with preset organisation systems, which can be a massive help in making sure a live performance runs smoothly. You can organise sounds by song, create smooth transitions between sections, and even set up entire setlists that automatically load the right sounds for each tune.

Worship and Theatre Applications:
Churches and theatre productions particularly benefit from workstations because they often need to recreate the sounds of entire orchestras or bands with limited personnel. A skilled keyboardist with a quality workstation can provide everything from subtle pad sounds during prayers to full orchestral arrangements during dramatic moments. Separating sections of the keyboard and adding doubled layers can allow for an ensemble sound that is impressively full-sounding from just your single keyboard performance. The reliability factor is crucial here, too. These instruments are built to handle the demands of regular use, and their comprehensive sound libraries mean you’re less likely to encounter situations where you simply don’t have the right sound for a particular piece.

Studio Applications:
While workstations are often thought of as live performance tools, they’re still highly valuable in studio settings. The high-quality sounds it can create quickly, straight from the unit, can serve as inspiration during songwriting, and the built-in sequencing capabilities make it excellent for creating demos or swiftly putting together atmospheric layers or instrumentals.
Some producers use workstations as their primary sound source, taking advantage of the instrument’s ability to layer multiple sounds and create complex arrangements, although it’s fair to say that this is somewhat less common nowadays with the popularity and capability of modern DAWs. However, being able to simply turn on an instrument and have access to a huge array of sounds and sequencing capability without needing to load up software, access plugins etc. Means that workstations certainly still shine in terms of convenience and efficiency once you know your way around them. When used in tandem with other equipment, their MIDI capabilities also make them excellent for controlling software instruments and external hardware.

Spotlight: The Yamaha MODX8+

So, a workstation seems like a pretty impressive bit of kit. But out of the numerous options available, which one is right for you? Let’s take a look at one of our favourites and see how it compares against the competition…

The Yamaha MODX8+ is a highly capable master keyboard workstation that finds a balance between high-quality sound, functionality, weight and price. Offering pro-level features at a very attractive price point, it has become a highly popular choice for session musicians, producers and live pianists. Plus, coming in at a slender 13.8kg, it’s one of the lightest 88-key workstations available.

Key Features That Set It Apart

Firstly, feel is an important feature of any keyboard, and the MODX8+ delivers with Yamaha’s Graded Hammer Standard (GHS) action, providing a satisfyingly realistic piano feel across all 88 keys. Having the authentic feel of a properly weighted action can make a huge difference in playability and comfort, especially for players who have extensive experience on acoustic pianos.

Sound-wise, the instrument combines two powerful sound engines: AWM2 (Advanced Wave Memory 2) for realistic acoustic instruments and FM-X for complex synthesized sounds. This dual-engine approach means you can access natural-sounding pianos and orchestral instruments alongside vibrant, highly customisable electronic synth sounds and effects.

With 256-note polyphony, the MODX8+ can handle complex arrangements without voice stealing, which is crucial when layering multiple sounds or using the sustain pedal extensively. There’s plenty of internal memory too, for additional samples or any other custom sounds you’d like to import.

Setting Up for Live Performance

Organising Your Setlist:
As briefly mentioned earlier, modern workstations like the MODX8+ excel at live performance organisation. You can create custom setlists that automatically load the right sounds for each song, complete with any splits, layers, or effects you need, eliminating the need to hunt through hundreds of presets during a performance. Spending a little time before your gig organising sounds logical; it takes away a lot of stress when you’re on stage. Group similar sounds together, use descriptive names, and create smooth transitions between sections. Also, many players find it helpful to have a few “emergency” sounds readily available for unexpected requests or technical issues. It can’t be overstated how useful this feature can be for busy session musicians or stage keyboardists. Being able to smoothly transition through all the perfect sounds with each song can be a game-changer for reliable performance.

Weight and Portability: Top in its class:
One of the MODX8+’s biggest advantages is its relatively light weight for an 88-key workstation. At less than 14kg it’s manageable for most players, though you’ll still want a quality keyboard stand and possibly a flight case for regular transport. The weight savings compared to older workstations and other flagship models is significant. Other models in its class weigh close to 20kg or even more, making a big difference in transport. The MODX8+ strikes a good balance between comprehensive features and practical portability.

Power and Connectivity:
Modern workstations typically offer pretty extensive connectivity options, including multiple audio outputs, MIDI in/out, USB connections, and pedal inputs. The MODX8+ includes all of these, making it easy to integrate into existing setups or connect to recording equipment. Use the multiple outputs to send different live sounds through to separate channels on a mixing board or connect it to your DAW via MIDI as a powerful production tool – the MODX8+ can wear whatever ‘hat’ you need.

MODX8+ vs. MODX6+

The MODX8+ has a little brother, the MODX6+, offering similar functionality. But how do the two compare?

While both instruments share the same sound engines and basic feature set, the key differences (no pun intended) lie in the keyboard action and portability. The MODX8+ offers full 88-key weighted action, whereas the MODX6+ has a smaller range at only 61 keys and only features a semi-weighted action. The MODX6+ wins when it comes to portability though, coming in at just 6.6kg and being 40cm shorter in width.

The choice between them will generally come down to your playing style and portability needs. If you’re primarily a pianist or need the full range for classical or jazz applications, the MODX8+ is the clear choice. The feel is much more authentic and the smaller key range can occasionally be restrictive for these styles. For players who prioritize portability and a more synth-like feel, you won’t go wrong with the 6.

Comparing top Keyboard Workstations: Korg, Roland, Arturia and Nord

Korg Kronos:
The Korg Kronos has been a workstation benchmark for years and has recently been relaunched by Korg with a new, revamped version offering faster startup times and an impressive array of sounds catering to highly diverse musical styles. The Kronos is known for its versatility, offering a whopping 9 sound engines. The variety of sounds available is enormous, but it can be overwhelming for some players. The Kronos weighs substantially more than the MODX8+ and comes with a higher price tag, but it offers more advanced sampling capabilities and a wider range of synthesis types. The Kronos is the ultimate choice for sound variety if you don’t mind the complexity, with an unparalleled library at its disposal. However, if you want something more portable and still highly versatile at a lower price point, the MODX8+ will be a better fit for you.

Roland Fantom Series:
Roland‘s Fantom series represents their current flagship workstation line, offering modern design and intuitive workflow features. Roland are renowned for their synth sounds and the Fantoms are the culmination of the best they have to offer. They’ve developed a bit of a fanbase for the warmer, rounder tone they produce from their ACB and Zencore synth sound engines compared to the FM (Frequency Modulation) engines used in models like the MOD8X+. Another favourite feature is their friendly, simplified user interface. While the Fantom series offers excellent build quality and sound, the MODX8+ often provides better value for money. For synth fanatics, the Fantom comes out on top, but if you’re after the general versatility and functionality of a workstation, the MODX8+ is more than capable at its lower price point. The real differences here are down to your music style. For ease of travel, Yamaha’s still unbeaten too – even Roland’s streamlined non-flagship line comes in heavier than the MODX8+.
The AstroLab is a relatively new 61-key stage keyboard combining the power of a synthesiser, intuitive controls, and an innovative ecosystem that focuses on bringing Arturia‘s acclaimed software instruments to hardware. They’re not meant for the knob-twiddler but more for the keyboard instrumentalist. The AstroLab takes a different approach from traditional workstations, focusing on preset-based performance rather than deep sound editing. This lends to the AstroLab feeling more like a versatile synth keyboard, rather than a full workstation in the traditional sense. While it excels at delivering high-quality sounds with minimal fuss, it lacks the comprehensive feature set and 88-key weighted action of the MODX8+.

Making the Right Choice – What’s the best workstation for you?

Ultimately, choosing a master keyboard workstation comes down to your specific needs, playing style, and budget. The Yamaha MODX8+ represents an excellent middle ground if you’re looking for a balanced machine, offering professional features without the extensive complexity or cost of some other flagship models.

If you’re primarily a pianist who needs access to other sounds for variety, the MODX8+ provides the weighted action and comprehensive sound library you need. If you’re a serious synth-lover or want the most extensive options for sound design, the Fantom or Kronos might be worth the additional investment.

Ease of transport is a significant factor too. If you’re regularly lugging around your keyboard, the MODX8+’s lighter weight becomes a significant advantage. For permanent installations, weight might be less of a concern than having the most comprehensive feature set.

The current keyboard market offers more top choices than ever before, and the MODX8+ stands out as a particularly well-rounded option that balances features, quality, and value.

Final Thoughts

Master keyboard workstations have evolved dramatically over the past few decades, becoming more powerful while simultaneously becoming more user-friendly. They’re amazing pieces of technology with more capability than you’d expect within a single instrument, and the Yamaha MODX8+ is no exception, delivering professional-level sound and functionality in a package that won’t break your back or your budget.

The key to getting the most from any workstation is understanding your performance needs and taking time to learn what your instrument can really do. Put in the time, and you’ll be able to create magic with these things.

Us too.

Enter the DAW controller, bringing physical feel and intuitive efficiency to your digital mixes. But are they worth the fuss? Let’s explore what DAW controllers can really do and take a closer look at one of the most promising options available…

What is a DAW Controller?

A DAW controller, short for Digital Audio Workstation controller, is a dedicated piece of hardware that gives you hands-on control over your music production software. Think of it as a physical extension of your DAW. Instead of clicking endlessly with a mouse or trying to learn a myriad of complex keyboard shortcuts, a DAW controller puts essential functions at your fingertips in a much more tactile, instinctive format.

The controller’s faders, knobs and buttons are mapped to functions inside your DAW, things like transport controls (play, stop, record), volume, solo, mute, channel selection, pan and tempo control. Many controllers go much deeper, letting you write automation, have precise control over your effects or plugin parameters and much more.

In practice, it feels a bit like sitting behind a traditional mixing desk. You’re no longer tethered to a screen in the same way and instead you can engage more physically with your music. That tactile connection changes how you interact with your tracks – it’s more intuitive, more responsive, and can massively speed up your workflow.

Controllers range from minimal units with a few faders and shortcut buttons, to advanced surfaces with motorised faders, LED displays, and plugin control capabilities. Most connect via USB and use common communication protocols, making them compatible with a range of popular DAWs.

So, in a nutshell: a DAW controller brings back the physical, expressive side of music-making in a digital world. It puts your hands – quite literally – on the mix.

Browse DAW Controllers & Control Surfaces

Why Should You Use a DAW Controller?

If you spend any time producing, mixing, or editing music inside a DAW, adding a controller to your setup can be a game-changer.

The primary benefit of a DAW controller is how it speeds up your mixing workflow. Instead of dragging your mouse around the screen or navigating through dropdown menus, many actions can be performed with dedicated buttons. It can take months or even years to learn keyboard shortcuts for your DAW, but a DAW controller can give you those shortcuts and more straight away, taking very little time to utilise efficiently.

Actions that usually take multiple clicks, like arming a track for recording, adjusting plugin parameters, or jumping between tracks, are often just one button press away.

But it’s not just about efficiency. There’s a creative angle too. A controller helps you interact with your music in a more fluid, expressive way. For example, you can write live automation with your hands in real time – performing fades, filter sweeps, or effect changes with a natural, musical feel. It’s like playing your DAW as an instrument.

A less-commonly mentioned benefit is how it helps your focus. With a controller in front of you, you spend less time staring at the screen and can rely more on your ears, your touch, and your instincts. That shift can do wonders for the quality of your mixes and (just as importantly) your enjoyment of the process.

DAW Controller vs. Keyboard & Mouse

The keyboard and mouse have been the standard tools for music production since the rise of DAWs. They’re precise, familiar, and perfectly capable. But they’re not always the most inspiring way to make music, nor the most efficient.

Ultimately, the keyboard and mouse were never designed for music production – they were the peripherals already in use by PC owners and so music producers had to adapt to use them too.

In contrast, when you’re using a controller, you’re no longer dragging tiny faders on-screen or opening menus to find what you need. The controller is purpose-built for your DAW and gives you the controls you regularly use right there at your fingertips. Beyond just the buttons and shortcuts, the ability to use a physical fader or potentiometer to control levels, program automation or precisely adjust effects parameters connects you to the music in a more immediate way. It’s tactile, instinctive, and often faster – especially once muscle memory kicks in.

Try automating a filter sweep with a mouse. Now try doing the same thing by physically turning a knob in real time. The second approach feels more natural and expressive. You can feel the movement, and that translates into your mix.

Of course, a keyboard and mouse aren’t going away entirely. They still have their place and in fact most controller users often utilise a hybrid setup – using the controller for where it really shines but still having the mouse and keyboard to hand for other finnicky processes or operations that are just easier to click through as normal.

DAW Controller vs. Analogue Mixer

Of course, this isn’t a debate of analogue vs digital mixing in general – both have their advantages and whichever method you prefer is completely up to you. But how does a DAW controller compare to an analogue mixing desk in terms of simple practicality and your workflow?

Ultimately, a DAW controller is the closest thing to mixing on an analogue mixer in terms of tactile feel, your ability to manipulate sounds in an instinctive way, and the speed of physical mixing. Yet it still allows for all the benefits of using a modern DAW: the endless list of plugins, the efficiency, consistency and ease of working in a digital format. Plus, of course, taking up just a fraction of the space (and cost!).

It’s important to remember that a controller only acts as a tool for interacting with your DAW, so the sounds that are possible and overall result of the final track won’t be any different – it’s still a digital process, not an analogue one. But the experience and ability to interact with your mix through feel and instinct – that’s what makes mixing with a DAW controller so special. They unlock the experience and interaction of analogue mixing with the versatility and consistent sound of the digital age.

There are also some handy advantages over an analogue mixer. Many modern DAW controllers (like the Nektar Panorama CS12, which we’ll explore later) offer motorised faders that sync with your session. You can move from one track to another and watch the fader quickly move to match your DAW’s current volume level.

With an analogue mixer you’re limited to the physical layout in front of you. Want to adjust channel 16? Time to scoot your chair along to reach it. Want to adjust a specific effect? Hop on over to that module. A DAW controller can seamlessly switch to the channel or plugin straight away just within the single unit.

The Nektar CS12 – What can a DAW controller bring to your mixing workflow?

While many DAW controllers on the market offer some combination of faders, pots, and transport controls, the real difference lies in how seamlessly these tools integrate into your creative habits. A good controller should feel like an extension of your thought process – intuitive enough to fade into the background, yet powerful enough to keep up with the most demanding sessions. This is where the design philosophy behind certain modern controllers starts to diverge. Instead of simply recreating familiar hardware workflows, some newer devices aim to reimagine the studio experience altogether, placing tactile control at the centre of a fluid, software-driven environment.

Among these, one device has been earning a reputation for striking the right balance: not just offering hands-on control but doing so with a degree of refinement and purpose-built functionality for which many producers have been asking for years.

Nektar’s CS12 is an incredible example of how a DAW controller can synergise with your DAW and give you the tactile control and efficiency to boost your mixing sessions. Let’s take a look at what it is, why it was created and how it might just be the best new addition for your home studio.

Who are Nektar?

Founded in 2009, Nektar traditionally focused on keyboard controllers with DAW integration, becoming well known for prioritising customer control and customisation. With a focus on bridging the gap between software and hardware, Nektar have carved out a name for themselves by offering controllers that enhance creativity and streamline complex DAW environments. Their standout feature across product lines is deep DAW integration – their devices are specifically built with popular DAWs in mind, seamlessly synergising with them rather than just functioning alongside them.

The CS12 is a culmination of the mapping technology and developments in intuitive control that Nektar have developed over their previous product lines, leading to the controller that many home producers have been looking for – and deserve!

What Exactly is the Nektar CS12?

The Panorama CS12 is a compact but powerful DAW channel strip controller, purpose-built for hands-on mixing, plugin control, and navigation within Logic Pro, Cubase, and Nuendo. Designed with free-flowing music creation in mind, it provides real-time tactile control over faders, panning, sends, plugins, transport functions, and automation, all without the need for manual mapping.

At the heart of the unit is a 100mm motorised fader supported by a colourful TFT display, 12 RGB-lit pots, a 6-segment LED meter, 18 function/navigation buttons, and 11 section-selection buttons. The unit is optimized for a left-hand fader/right-hand control workflow and was designed so that anyone who’s already familiar with Logic or a similar DAW should feel comfortable with the layout straight away.

This controller isn’t a generic USB surface – it’s deeply integrated into the DAW via Nektar’s ControlCore system, allowing you to manipulate third-party plugins and native DAW elements straight away.

If you’re looking to upgrade your workflow and make a change from staring at a screen and a cursor in your sessions, the CS12 is an incredible new piece of kit to let you do just that, with all the mapping and setup done to let your creativity take the wheel straight away.

While the CS12 doesn’t currently support DAWs like Ableton, FL Studio, Reaper or Studio one natively, Nektar have indicated that broader support will be available in the future, so keep your eye out!

Final Thoughts

Digital music production has become yet another part of our life dominated by screens and mouse clicks. A DAW controller reintroduces the physical connection to music-making, restoring a greater sense of feeling, physicality and intuitive connection to your workflow. They’re sort of like a mix between a traditional mixer and an instrument, letting you really play with the mix and express yourself more freely.

Many are perfectly happy to make do with a keyboard and mouse, but if you want to streamline your mixing process while making it both faster and more enjoyable, DAW controllers offer some undeniable benefits.

Ultimately, it’s about choosing the setup that best supports your creativity best. If for you, an intuitive physical interface is what you’re looking for, the Nektar CS12 represents a smart new step toward more hands-on, inspired production.

But what exactly is VRM? How does it work? Why does it make such a dramatic difference in Yamaha‘s CLP-875 and more importantly, how will it transform your playing experience?

What Is VRM (Virtual Resonance Modeling)?

VRM, or Virtual Resonance Modeling, is Yamaha’s proprietary sound modeling technology designed to recreate the organic, complex interactions found in a real grand piano. VRM was designed in collaboration with the team that creates their acoustic grands, to make sure that the CLP is just like playing one of their legendary pianos but in your living room.

On an acoustic instrument, when you press the damper pedal or play certain notes, other strings vibrate sympathetically, the frame, and even the cabinet contributes to the sound. VRM digitally replicates these intricate interactions, in real time and is something that’s often missing from sample based systems and can make all the difference in a recording.

How VRM Works in the Yamaha CLP-875

The CLP-875 doesn’t just play a recorded note; it calculates what the piano would sound like in any given moment. Here’s what it considers:

Which keys are being pressed

How fast and hard you’re playing

Pedal positions, including half-pedaling and re-pedaling

How notes interact and overlap

How the entire piano body would resonate

The temperature of the instrument

The result is a performance that feels acoustically alive, evolving with each nuance of your playing.

Binaural Sampling + VRM = Next-Level Headphone Experience

When using headphones on the CLP-875, Yamaha employs binaural sampling, a technique that captures the sound from the player’s perspective, creating a 3D-like audio image resulting in a much more natural experience.

When this is combined with VRM:

You hear subtle resonances as if you’re sitting in front of a 9-foot concert grand.

It becomes easier to forget you’re playing a digital instrument.

Long practice sessions are less fatiguing and more emotionally engaging.

Why VRM Matters for Real Pianists

VRM isn’t just a flashy feature, it’s something experienced pianists genuinely feel and appreciate. One of the most noticeable benefits is expressive pedalling: both the soft and damper pedals respond with nuanced precision, allowing for subtle dynamic shaping and authentic half-pedalling effects. Chords decay naturally, with rich overtones that fade organically rather than cutting off or sounding artificially looped. Perhaps most importantly, sympathetic resonance, the subtle vibrations of un-played strings are realistically recreated, which is essential when playing Romantic or Impressionist repertoire, like Chopin’s nocturnes or Debussy’s tone poems. All of this contributes to a heightened sense of emotional feedback, where even the quietest passages are filled with the ambient depth and colour you’d expect from a concert grand.

Born from the mind of engineer Brian Funk, 1010music has carved out a niche as the cool nerds of electronic music hardware since their debut Bitbox in 2016. They’re the ones who decided that modular synths didn’t have to take up half your flat, and that samplers didn’t have to come with a 400-page manual which users see no shame in consulting Dr Google in how to do something. 1010music really did slide into the music tech scene, took one look at all the beige, black and red gear in studios, and said, “What if we made this smaller, smarter and portable?”

They brought us sleek, colourful boxes with touchscreens, deep features and a wealth of inspiration, Bluebox and Blackbox units have already become stables in a lot of modular and dawless rigs, now Bitbox, Lemondrop, Fireball, Razzmatazz, and Bento seek to do the same.

What is the 1010Music Bento?

Bento is a standalone music production monster. If you’ve ever stared at a sea of USB cables, various MIDI keyboards, and that dusty Audio interface but missing that crucial component of music making, “an idea”. Fear not, Bento has arrived to make sure you can jam wherever you are. It’s as if someone at 1010music thought, “What if we put Ableton Live, an Akai MPC, and a very smug octopus into a lunchbox?”

This isn’t just a sampler. It’s a “compact performance studio sampling production lab”, which sounds like the sort of thing Q would hand to James Bond before he takes it on a mission to remix Moby.

DAW-less, Flaw-less

Bento kicks your laptop to the kerb and lets you enter the wild, expanding world of DAW-less workflow, which is music speak for “No thank you computers!” With eight tracks, clip launching, scene sequencing, and more bells and whistles than a steampunk parade, it lets you compose, perform, and jam all in one gloriously compact musical powerhouse, truly another take on recording your ideas.

Details

A crystal clear and responsive 7″ touchscreen allowing you to see parts even mid set.

16 backlit velocity and pressure-sensitive pads.

An onboard granular digital synth, meaning you can now mangle sounds into shimmering oblivion.

Build Quality

Let’s talk design. It’s about the size of a tea tray and built like it could survive both a gig and your toddler’s worst tantrum. The sort of premium build that whispers, “I could survive a drop or two.” Not that you should, but being built like a tank does bring peace of mind.

As for connectivity, the Bento offers three stereo ins, three stereo outs, Multiple MIDI in and outs via TRS adapters (yes, they are included), USB host and device support, a headphone jack, and an integrated battery so you can make beats in a park somewhere, up a tree or even in your local. Truly the lab for the mad musician on the go.

Introducing bento – Portable Sampling Production Lab

                Sample every flavor…
Bento provides advanced sampling with recording and playback at pristine 24-bit quality. It covers all the sampler bases from chromatic, multi-sampled instruments playable from a keyboard to pad-based drum racks to cradle your fave one-shots and loops. Plus you get an intuitive beat slicer for loop editing and a granular synth similar to the wildly-popular lemondrop.

Immediate realtime control …
Tactile, real time, control is the deal with bento’s 7” touchscreen, 16 velocity + pressure-sensitive pads, and 8 endless encoders. The pads feel great and controller response is immediate with no laptop buffer settings to fuss with! Trigger samples, scenes, mix tracks, tweak filters and effects, and more. Bento is perfect for DAWless jams and recording.

Create, edit, control, perform…
Sequence clips using real time or step recording and a vast collection of sampled instruments and loops. Create and edit fast with touch input and a piano roll or use new probability tools. Eight tracks with four sequences each let you launch complete arrangements or clips on the fly.

Plays well with others…
Bento is a great sequencer and control center for other MIDI devices too. With generous I/O—including three stereo inputs, three stereo outputs, dual TRS MIDI I/O, USB-C host/device ports, and an internal 3-hour battery and mixer with effects – it’s the core of a powerful DAWless setup.

Smarter Than the Average Groovebox

It’s powered by a brain that borrows heavily from its Nanobox cousins, Fireball (the synth) and Razzmatazz (the drum machine). If you already own those colourful little gems, Bento becomes the big sibling who isn’t afraid to whip you into shape for that big recital.

What sets it apart is the scene-based sequencer. Here you can arrange clips, trigger chains, and feel like a conductor in a techno opera. There’s probability, randomisation, and real-time control, all designed to help you produce something that sounds intentional, even when it isn’t, the electronical version of, “keep going, the crowd won’t notice if you make a mistake” and then ends up sounding incredible.

Creativity on the Go

It’s portable. It’s battery-powered. It fits in your bag. You could genuinely whip this out on a bus and drop a grime set between Brighton and Croydon. Not just a production monster, but a musical notepad, the rickety click clacks of the train? Rhythmical bleeps of the bus payment system trigger a musical idea? Get it down! Back in the day musicians would leave themselves voice mails, or use a dictaphone. Now you can actually bring the idea to life on the go, the future is amazing.

Final Thoughts on Bento

So here it is: the Bento. A proper standalone performance studio with more features than your mate’s modular rig and fewer crashes than your ageing laptop.

If you’re the sort of person who’s tired of software updates, cable spaghetti, and asking “what driver do I need? Where’s that hum coming from? Why don’t you work!?” well, the Bento might just be the DAW detox you didn’t know you needed.

Micro Instruments, room for more?

1010music have a cool selection of little nugget sized units that pack some serious heat.

Bitbox
The OG of 1010music’s touchy-feely sampler range, Bitbox is the polite librarian of your Eurorack dreams, quietly powerful, ruthlessly organised, and capable of triggering more loops than a 2000s trance set. It’s the go-to for modular heads who want sample playback without needing to check Google.

Lemondrop
A granular synth that sounds like a citrus fruit being disassembled by lasers. Lemondrop takes tiny slices of audio and turns them into shimmering pads, glitchy textures, or full-on alien invasions. Ideal for people who think “regular” synths just aren’t weird enough.

Fireball
A digital wavetable synth that sounds like it was raised in a nightclub and has never known rest. Fireball serves aggressive leads, chunky basses, and ear-searing wobbles with an interface so slick, it practically dares you to touch it. Perfect for dance producers who want big sounds in a small box.

Razzmatazz
Part drum machine, part sampler, part chaotic goblin in a pink shell. Razzmatazz spits out punchy, glitched-up rhythms and lets you twist them into sonic pretzels in real time. Think of it as a very tiny drummer and a love of distortion.

Tangerine
Basically, Tangerine is what happens when 1010music builds a groovebox that respects your time and your carry-on luggage limit. It keeps things tight and tidy with a focus on quick sample triggering and performance sequencing, perfect for people who think “less is more, unless we’re talking about kicks per second.” It’s got that signature 1010 touchscreen workflow.

Round Up

The synth community didn’t just like 1010music, they practically adopted them as their own. The Blackbox became a cult favourite among DAW-less live performers, the Lemondrop was hailed as “granular for mortals,” and the Fireball gave lead synths enough sauce to start a street food business.

On forums, YouTube, and Reddit’s synth underworld, you’ll see phrases like:

“Game changer.”

“Perfect for live sets.”

“If Nintendo made grooveboxes.”

People love these things because they work, and not just in theory or under perfect studio conditions, but on your lap in a café at 2am after three coffees cause you just played a midnight show and we’re proud to stock them.
